Apple Stores by Number
The process of opening an Apple store involves an enormous number of tasks under the larger headings of research, site scouting and selection, leasing, construction, staffing, opening and operating. To track all of these categories and tasks, each store is assigned a unique number when it formally becomes a "project." These "roll out" numbers are in the format Rxxx, starting with R001 and are now over R500. You can see that not all numbers have been used over the years, and that some numbers are yet unknown. Check my store chronology for more information. The order of the numbers does not correlate with the chronology of the stores' openings—some stores are planned early but opened late, resulting in a substantial mis-match. For example, Chinook Center was R209, but opened at the same time as store R420, indicating it was delayed. The order of the stores also provides some insight into how Apple focuses on various locations and countries. For example, you can see that certain France, Spain and China stores have consecutive (or nearly consecutive) store numbers. The numbers are also used internally to identify each store for the Concierge reservation system, job listings and other Apple purposes. If you know the identify of any of the missing numbers (especially the early R037, R098 and R137 numbers), or find errors, send me an e-mail. This list is sorted by store number, and lists the location city first, followed by the formal name of the store. |
