The stairway entrance inside the Powell Street BART transit station is closed. A notice on the plywood is dated July 31, 2003, and says that effective Aug. 4th the stairway would be closed to allow for the demolition of future Apple Computer store by DPR Construction. The note added that the demolition work would take four weeks--when this photo was taken, it had been over 5 weeks.

The sign over the stairway reads, "Stockton-Ellis-Market St." The exit includes stairs and an escalator up to the street corner on which the Apple store is located. The stairway is within the store's property line, but is considered BART property. It opens onto Stockton St. just north of O'Farrell St., and not into the building itself.
