Hiring - Turned Down

The process of being hired comes with the possibility that you won't be hired. However, what you do after that is strictly up to you.

Here are copies of several e-mails between a 22 year-old man living in Pennsylvania and the Apple recruiter, as posted on his blog.

[applicant's explanation of the hiring process]

This is really interesting, I felt the need to share it. I recently spend the past few months on several phone interviews, as well as one face to face interview for a position as a Mac Specialist at the newly formed Apple store in the Lehigh valley mall. After not receiving a phone call as to whether or not I got the job within the time they had given me, I became curious. This email I received put my curiosity to rest, but brought on it's own curiosity within it.

[e-mail from recruiter to applicant]

Jason xxxxxx,

First of all, let me personally thank you for your interest in Apple Retail and for your participation in our interview process for the Lehigh Valley Apple Retail Store. It was truly our pleasure to meet you.

At this time we have chosen to move ahead with candidates who better meet the business needs today.

[response from applicant to recruiter]

Jenn,

See now this makes me curious, as I personally know one of the people that was hired for a full time position. Let me explain why this makes me curious. The person in question, I know for a fact, has no sales background, no background in computers, and no college degree. So I ask you, how my degree in Computer Animation which has granted me a vast knowledge in the use of mac computers and a various array of it's programs, as well background in sales, and customer service, can account for, what seems like obviously nothing. When this person in question can get a full time position as a Mac Specialist, and I cannot, it makes me curious as too where apple is looking to take this new store, and what standards they are trying to set for it, as well as their company. Obviously not very high standards, as it would seem.

Jason K.HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT!!?!?!?!?!?!?!

and it continues...

[recruiter right-back-at-ya to applicant]

Hi Jason,

Thanks for writing.

We were inundated with qualified applicants for the new Lehigh store. With all of the talented candidates, the management team had a very tough time making hiring decisions.

Thank you for your interest in Apple Retail.

Best,

Jenn

[applicant flogging it back to recruiter]

You didn't answer my question. Cut the cue card rhetoric and give me a straight answer. How can someone who has absolutly no qualifications get 1 of 2 full time jobs, when someone who has all of the qualifications is left out to dry.

[recruiter exceeding max number of replies to applicant]

Hi Jason,

I'm not sure what you're hoping to accomplish with this accusatory line of questioning. I will just say that more than just job experience are taken into account.

[applicant taking it to the limit]

Jenn,

I'm not hoping to accomplish anything other then a honest answer. We hired a pretty face to draw in a younger crowd, for example would suffice. However I wouldn't expect someone in your position or anyone who had a hand in the hiring process to admit to that. I understand how a business works, please don't take me for a fool. So it is now that I say goodbye. I leave you with a disappointed impression of employees involved with apple. That impression sadly, will be passed along.

Best Regards,

Jason
