Gateway Retail Plans

Gateway president Ted Waitt presented these slides during a May 2003 stockholders and an earlier meeting with Smith Barney analysts, to describe the company's plans for the retail stores. The next month they began remodeling its 192 stores patterned after a pilot store in San Diego. Gateway had 296 back in 2001, but dropped to 272 last December in a cost-cutting move, and then dropped another 80 by April 2003. Note that the company wanted to "transfrom" the stores by the 2003 holiday season, redesigning about 100 stores, and doing a "moderate redesign" on others. Also note in slide #4 the reference to a "Future Design" for "possible new stores."

Drop by a Gateway store and see if the "living room" motif captured in these rendered photos can match an Apple retail store!
