  1. Friendly Center - Greensboro, NC - Feb. 21 - Part of a 75-acre open-air shopping village located northwest of downtown, with 1.3 million s.f. of retail space anchored by Sears, Belk and Macy's. The store was originally slated for a space in the original mall (F5?), and job listings were posted Nov. 7, 2007. However, the mall was expanded by 20,000 s.f., so construction was delayed to occupy a larger space (5,873 s.f. ,$1.7 million) in that area, next to the future Williams Sonoma and Anthropologie stores.   2. Robina Town Center - Robina (Australia) - First reported by MacTalk in mid-Nov. 2008, this mall 50 miles south of Brisbane on the mid-east coast will finish a waterside expansion area in mid-2009 where Apple will locate. The area used to be a swamp before 1980, but has been developed into an planned, inland, lakeside community of 30,000 residents along the M1 highway, with a full range of residential options, office space and amenities. The upscale location, with 1 million s.f. and 220 retailers, draws shoppers from a wide region. Job listings posted Nov. 25, 2008, but interviews delayed until March 2009. Grand opening May 9th.   3. 928 State Street - Santa Barbara (CA) - In Feb. 2005 a newspaper noted that the Blue Bee clothing firm "beat out" Apple for a fourth branch at 513 State Street. In Dec. 2006 a potential space at 716 State St. address was leased to M.A.C. Cosmetics, eliminating another possible location. (2-05). In Jan. 2008 the local newspaper reported Apple was negotiating for historic 928 State St. (Rogers Furniture Building, 1926-era), formerly Pier 1. The 52-foot wide space had about 9,400 s.f. each on the ground floor and mezzanine. The lease is reportedly $4.53 per s.f. , or about $68,000 a month. However, planning documents filed with the city in Dec. 2007 indicate Apple would remove the 4,375 s.f. mezzanine, replace it with a 3,706 s.f second-story, and install a new elevator and stairs. Job listings were posted March 29, 2008, indicating a late 2008 opening. However, also in March 2008 Apple requested that consideration of their application be postponed, and meetings were held between Apple and Historical Landmarks committee in April. In early Oct. 2008 the city's Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) reviewed revised plans from Apple architectural representative Cearnal Andrulaitis. Construction began in late Oct. 2008.   4. Bahnhofstrasse - Zurich (Switzerland) - In August 2005 the Swiss-based Web site MacPrime reported that Bahnhofstrasse 77 would be a future store site. In March 2006 they reported Apple had signed a contract for the the 2,960 s.f. space at a reported $762,000 a year. The space is now occupied by a United Colors of Benetton store. In early May 2006, the newspaper Bilanz said the lease papers had been signed and the store is scheduled to open by summer 2007. Appeared as a job location on Aug. 26, 2006. Then a lease dispute between the landlord and Benetton was first reported in Sept. 2006, and as of early November is still delaying Apple's take-over the property. In Jan. 2008 a Swiss newspaper said the lease dispute had been resolved, and the 3,200 s.f. store would open in mid-July 2008, with Apple paying $1.9 million a year on the lease. As of May, 2008 there is no visible construction, but by June MacPrime revealed architectural plans showing a 3,012 s.f. single-level store.   5. Westfield Doncaster - Doncaster (Australia) - First reported in the MacTalk forums in mid-Nov. 2008, this mall was Westfield's first entry in Victoria, and has been expanded and remodeled several times since it opened in 1969. At 1.3 million s.f., the mall is among the top 10 largest in the country, with 420 retailers. It's located in the suburbs 11 miles east of Melbourne, about 8 miles north of the existing Chadstone store. Job listings posted Nov. 25, 2008. Grand opening May 23, 2009.   6. Galleria at Roseville - Roseville (N. Caliif.) - A Westfield-operated mall northeast of Sacramento with 187 stores. The company is adding about 487,000 s.f. to the existing 1.1 million s.f., including three parking garages, a multi-screen cinema and from 80 to 100 new retailers. In late May the developer handed out a list of the first five tenants, and Apple was listed among them. Job listings posted Jan. 30th. Expansion Phase I opened in Fall 2008, but the Apple store will open with Phase 2. In early May '09 the mall's Web site listed Apple as "Coming Soon."   7. Scottsdale Quarter - Scottsdale (AZ) - In mid-August, 2008 a tipster said Apple would finally land in this upscale city of 202,000 residents just outside the Phoenix north city limits. In mid-October a local newspaper pointed to a 7,857 s.f. space at the Scottsdale Quarter mall, now under construction. It's located in this suburb northeast of Phoenix, and just across the street from the existing Kierland Commons mall. The 600,000 s.f. mall is operate by Glimcher, and will eventually include office space, residential and hotel space, and a cinema. The first two stores opened in March 2009, but others are opening in phases through 2010. Features a unique design: a high-ceiled box with glass-front entrances at both ends.   8. Rideau Centre - Ottawa (Ont.) - A 740,000 s.f. downtown mall with 180 shops just east of iconic Parliament Hill, attached to a Westin hotel and transit stations. The mall is on four levels and features a cinema and large Sears store. Will open in space #227. Job listings posted Feb. 4, 2009. Grand opening July 18th.   9. Churchill Square - Brighton, UK - An old mall was demolished and redeveloped in 1998 to create 470,000 square-feet of retail space in this south coast resort city. It has 85 shops and 5 restaurants serving locals and tourists. Job listing posted March 22, 2007. Originally intended to opening before the holiday season 2007, but failed to appear. Then job listings re-appeared on Feb. 4, 2009 for a late summer 2009 opening.   10. Square One - Mississauga (Ont.) - In Jan. 2009 a tipster said Apple will open a store in this Toronto suburb. The huge mall has 1.7 million s.f. and 360 stores, including one of North America's highest-grossing Wal-Mart stores. In Feb. 2009 a black barricade appeared in the new CitySide "neighborhood" of the mall, to the left of the renovated Tommy Hilfiger store, covering space 2-403. Job listings posted March 16, 2009.   11. Reston Town Center - Reston (VA) - A combined 355,000 s.f. retail center with 1.2 million s.f. of adjacent office space, Hyatt Regency hotel and cinema grouped around a large fountain sculpture in this upscale northwest DC suburb near Dulles airport. The area's average household income is among the highest for any Apple store. Building permits issued Feb. 3, 2009, and the store could open by late summer in the former Eddie Bauer space.   12. Main Place - Naperville (IL) - This city of 141,000 is about 45 minutes west of Chicago's Loop, and is beefing up its downtown shopping district with new buildings that reflect an older period. The city is #3 on "Money Magazine's" 2008 "move liveable" cities, and considered among the best "walking" towns. It will be in the former Sharper Image space at 120 W. Jefferson St., but with a significant expansion at the back of the building. Job listings appeared Aug. 4, 2008, but no movement until May 2009, when the store was an empty shell.   13. Alstertal - Hamburg (Germany) - A 3-level enclosed regional mall northeast of city center in the Poppenbuttel district of the city, the second largest in Germany and largest non-capital in the EU. The 1970-vintage mall has 240 stores in 635,000 s.f., along with a 3,000 space carpark. The mall was upgraded and expanded in 2006. In early June '09 the iFUN.de Web site spotted a construction barricade at the AEZ mall. Apple store will occupy space #37 on the ground level of the mall. Job listings posted Feb. 18, 2009.   14. Legacy Place - Dedham (Mass.) - In Feb. 2009 a tipster noted that Apple was listed among the future tenants of this future 675,000 s.f. mall in the far southwest suburbs of Boston, just off I-95. The mall will include a cinema, LL Bean store, Whole Foods grocery, along with 85,000 s.f. of office space and other attractions. Job listings were posted in March 2009.   15. Stonebriar Shopping Centre - Frisco (TX) - In Jan. 2008 a tipster pointed to this 1.6 million s.f., 3-level, super-regional mall about 30 miles north of Dallas, and 15 miles from the existing Willow Bend (Plano) store. The mall was opened by General Growth Properties Inc. in 2000 and has 165 stores. Originally believed to open in late 2008, construction began in early 2009. Job listings Dec. 12, 2008.   16. Carugate Carosello - Milan, Italy - Long-rumored but confirmed only in early Feb. 2009 when job listings were posted. The city of 1.3 million is in the north of the country, and is considered a world art and fashion capital. The exact location of the store is unknown, or whether it will be a street-level store or within a shopping mall. Initial speculation was that it would be at 28 Corso Vittorio Emanuele, a former clothing store. But in late July 2009 a black construction barricade appeared in front of a space at the Carosello di Carugate suburban shopping mall. Grand opening Sept. 5, 2009.   17. Augusta Mall - Augusta (GA) - Sept. 19 - The General Growth Properties mall has 1.1 million s.f. and 134 shops along I-520 and near I-20. The mall finished an expansion area of exterior buildings, which is where the Apple store will be located--building A, between The Walking Store and the Sleep Number stores. Job listings appeared Dec. 12, 2008. Construction is reportedly delayed by a late shipment of stainless steel from Japan.   18. Polo Park - Winnipeg (Canada) - Sept. 19 - The first store in mid-Canada, and first in the province of Manitoba, serving a city of about 700,000. The Cadillac-Fairview mall has 189 stores and services in 1.1 million s.f., just east of city center. Store will open in about 4,000 s.f. in space 138B. Job listings posted March 16, 2009.   19. Chapelfield Shopping Centre - Norwich (UK) - The town is the capital for East Anglia, with a regional population of 1 million. The mall opened in 2005, and is located city-centre with 99 shops in 527,000 s.f., and 117 residential apartments. Store will be in the former USC space (8,000 s.f.) #241, which they call "upper ground level." Store features unique central wall with 58" video displays, apparently because of support columns that couldn't be removed. Job listings posted April 1, 2009, construction began June 22.   20. The Promenade at Temecula - Temecula (S. Calif.) - A 1.1 million s.f. indoor mall along I-15 between San Diego and LA, with 140 shops. It's operated by Forest City, and an expansion area of 126,000 s.f. opened March, 26, 2009. Job listings were posted Oct. 3, 2008, and by Aug. 2009 a black barricade and construction was spotted just north of the P.F. Chang restaurant in the expansion area. Grand opening Sept. 26th.   21. Oakridge Centre - Vancouver (Canada) - This 575,000 s.f. mall is managed by Ivanhoe Cambridge, and has 150 shops about four miles south of the existing Pacific Centre Apple store.   22. Fairview Pointe Claire - Located along the Trans-Canada Highway southwest of Montreal, with 200 shops on two levels in 1 million s.f. operated by Cadillac-Fairview.   23. Manhasset - Manhasset (NY) - Oct. 17 - Apple leased space just outside the boundary of the 1956-era outdoor Americana Manhasset mall that includes 45 ultra-chic international retailers, but which is strangely next to a unremarkable, discount fashion store. The existing building was demolished and Apple has built a new structure that will have a very tall ceiling, dual glass storefronts (1 entrance), skylight and suspended Apple logo, like the existing Scottsdale store.   24. St. David's Centre 2 - Cardiff (UK) - October 22 - The town is capital for Wales. The existing mall is being renovated and enlarged into 1.4 million s.f. with 160 stores and 300 second-level apartments. The centre will also have public meeting and gathering areas, including a city public library. Job listings posted April 1, 2009. The expanded section opens Oct. 22, 2009 and the Apple store opened the same day.   25. Union Square - Aberdeen (Scotland) - Oct. 29 - Revealed by job listings on March 6, 2009. The city is Scotland's third-largest at 202,000, in the far northeast of the island. The city reportedly has the highest average weekly income in Scotland. The 700,000 s.f. city-centre shopping complex is adjacent to the rail-bus stations, and is in the final stages of construction.   26. Carrousel du Louvre - Paris - 99 Rue de Rivoli - Nov. 7 - In mid-2007 tipsters pointed to the underground shopping mall as the first France store. The store is not located beneath the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum, but rather 455 feet west beneath the inverse pyramid of the mall, which is exempt from the country's regulation against Sunday operation, and hosts 8 million visitors a year. As of early June, 2008 Apple had received city approval to locate in 7,700 s.f. of the former Lalique and Résonance stores, spaces #15 and #33. In early Dec. 2008 a sign appeared saying the current retailer will move out Dec. 13th to another space. By April 2009 construction was well underway. Job listings posted Feb. 18, 2009.   27. Odysseum (France) - Nov. 14 - Without any forewarning, Apple posted job listings for a store in the city of Montpellier on Feb. 18, 2009. The city of 225,000 residents is a provincial capital, home to a major university and a regional hub along the Mediterranean. The exact location is unknown, but could be located within or near the Place de la Comédie in city-center. Reportedly, the store's opening has been delayed slightly to allow the Carousel de Louvre store to open first, in order to maximize publicity for the first store in France.   28. Westfield Chermside - Queensland (Australia) - Nov. 14 - Spotted by locals just 2 weeks after the Robina store opening south of Brisane (and 90 min. away), this mall in the north suburbs of Brisbane is Queensland's largest with 400 stores. The mall draws shopper from a huge region of residents and tourists. Unknown space at the mall, but some spaces are single level, some are two-level.   29. Upper West Side -New York City (NY) - Nov. 14 - In mid-December, 2007 the New York Post said Apple had procured the building at 1981 Broadway (at 67th St.), and would demolish the two-story building and install a large store in the former 3-story Victoria Secret store (1999-2007) and a Regency Theater. The location satisfies an apparent need for an Upper West Side store, which previously had been rumored around 84th & Broadway. As of May 14, 2009 the existing building has been demolished and the steel structure for the new building has been erected. The permits indicate 50% of the existing exterior wall must be preserved, the building will be 45 feet tall, have a 75-foot storefront, and that there will be just a single floor of about 8,400 s.f. Total cost stated in the building permit is $37,945,000. Apple retained 50% of the exerior walls to avoid filing for a demolition and construction permit, instead of a "alteration and reconstruction" permit. Based on early photos, the storefront will resemble the Boylston Street (Boston) store, with a little bit of Fifth Avenue and George Street. About Aug. 1st, construction workers at the store said the store would open by Thanksgiving, and CFO Peter Oppenheimer has confirmed a November opening.   30. Pheasant Lane - Nashua (NH) - Nov. 21 - This 870,000 Simon-operated mall on the south side of the state's second-largest city would be the second in the state (sales tax-free). The mall is being expanded, and draws customers from nearby Massachusetts. Job listings posted June 18, 2009, constructure barricade erected mid-Sept. 2009. [barricade, Sept.   31. Greenwich Avenue - Greenwich (CT) - Nov. 21 - In early June, 2008 a local newspaper reported that Apple's logo was on zoning documents for 356 Greenwich Ave., the long-closed Clearview Cinema movie theater. The 1914-era building has been renovated several times, and now has an upper and lower theater, fully-rigged stage and some dressing rooms.   32. Cribbs Causeway - Bristol (UK) - Dec. 12 - This mall is 10 miles north of city center (and the existing Cabot Circus Apple store) along the M5 highway, with 135 stores and 7,000 parking spaces. Job listings posted June 18, 2009. Store in space #114 in the upper mall next to River Island. It's the second-largest Apple store in the UK behind Regent Street. [mall plan, pdf] [store location]

2010

  1. Große Bockenheimer Straße - Frankfurt (Germany) - In March 2009 local media said city building officials confirmed that Apple had submitted plans for a 2-level, glass-front store at #30 on this street, in city center and not far from Opera Plaza. A rendering shows a reconstructed building set in front of a pedestrian mall and fountain. The building will house about 18,000 s.f. of retail (7,000 on ground-floor), 11,000 of office and 7,500 of residential space. Photos show a two-level space for the Apple store. Job listings posted June 15, 2009. Apple announced the store grand opening for Dec. 5, 2009, but then three days before that date, they announced a postponement until January 2010.   2. Eldon Square South - Newcastle on Tyne (UK) - Feb. 16 - A town of 190,000 in the north of the UK, and the furthest-north England up to this time. The 5,782 s.f. store will be on the second level of a 20-store, 175,000 s.f. expansion of the main Eldon Square mall, to which it's connected by an overhead walkway. In mid-Sept. 2009 job listings appeared and the mall plan shows a second-level space for Apple on its mall plan.   3. SouthGate|Bath - Bath (UK) - March 27 - An outdoor, city-centre shopping destination that is opening in three phases through fall 2010. It will have 56 retail spaces in 420,000 s.f. Bondi Junction Westfield - Bondi Junction (Australia) - May 28 - Located in the near suburb of Sydney, this 1.4 million s.f. center has over 500 shops, restaurants, cinema, gym, supermarkets and other attractions. Peek photos show a Scottsdale Quarter-like building design and inside trees. Job listings posted Jan. 25, 2010. Grand opening at 8 a.m., coinciding with the Australian arrival of the iPad.   5. Southgate - Edmonton (Alb, Canada) - May 28 - A 1970-vintage indoor mall with 165 shops in 455,000 s.f. operated by Ivanhoe Cambridge south of city center. The mall has been expanded several times, most recently in Aug. 2009 with 150,000 s.f. and 30 shops. It's about 7 miles southeast of the existing West Edmonton Mall retail store.   6. Tacoma Mall - Tacoma (WA) - May 29 - This Simon Property Group Inc. mall is located along I-5 south of Seattle, and has just completed a 100,000 s.f. lifestyle addition, giving it 1.3 million s.f. and 150 shops. The store will establish coverage at the south end of Puget Sound, which now only lines the eastern part of the sound. Job listings posted Dec. 12, 2008, indicating a mid-2009 opening. However, no activity was noted until Oct. 2009, when a mall spokesperson confirmed the Apple store in part of the former Nordstrom space. [mall brochure, pdf] [mall plan]
  7. Georgetown (Wisconsin Avenue) - Washington (DC) - In late Sept. 2007 a tipster said Apple was finalizing lease plans for a store in the Georgetown district. A week later newspapers revealed Apple had purchased the three-story building at 1229 Wisconsin Ave. NW for $13.7 million. The land and building are assessed at $7,288,500, and the lot covers 7,456 s.f. Previous tenant French Connection renovated the building in 2004, which required approval from the 3-architect Old Georgetown Board for any exterior changes. The area is transitioning to more upscale retail stores. By June 1, existing tenant FCUK was moving out, but no Apple construction visible. In June, 2008 a tipster says Apple is having city permit problems. In July 2008 Apple had presented a demolition/re-built plan to the Board for approval. However, the Board and an architectural commission failed to approve Apple's three sets of designs. Apple postponed its Jan. 6, 2009 its presentation to the ANC.   8. Uptown - Minneapolis (MN) - In Jan. 2010 job listings pointed to an unknown location in the Uptown neighborhood of this city. The location was eventually identified as 3018 Hennepin Ave. S., a former bar that was demolished and approved for a two-story retail space of 46x127' providing 9,600 s.f., including a large skylight, upper-level business "Business Briefing Center" (first one) and rooftop garden.   9. Los Cerritos Center - Cerritos (S.Calif.) - Along I-605 in mid-LA/Orange County, with 180 shops and restaurants in 1.1 million s.f. operated by Macerich. It is across from a huge a huge regional auto mall, and is anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom. Job listings posted in early Nov. 2009.   10. Perth City - Perth (Australia) - So far, the only store to be on the western side of the continent. On July 16, 2009 a job listing appeared for a store in city centre, but without an indication of exactly where in this western city of about 1.6 million. But it wasn't until Nov. 11, 2009 that a demoliton application was made for 790 Hay Street, a 1910-era, 3-story building formerly occupied by a pastry shop and restaurant. It was designed with the "Federation Anglo-Dutch" architectural style. On Dec. 1, 2009 a "refurbishment application was filed with the city planning agency, notated "Apple Inc."   11. Opéra - Paris - In mid-May 2006 Apple V-P Europe Pascal Cagli reportedly emailed authorized resellers that the title "Apple Centre" was being revoked, and replaced with another term. The French Web site MacGeneration says this is in preparation for opening a store in the Opera district of Paris, generally north of the Champs Elysees, during 2006. Later rumors put the store on Beaumarchais Blvd. some time during 2007. But then in Sept. 2008 a tipster pointed to a signed lease for #12 rue Halévy, a 112-wide building set on Place Jacques Rouché behind the Opera House. The building dates to 1865 and has lately been converted to offices. The architect is reportedly Jean-Jacques Ory, who desgned a corner entrance on the south side. Construction on the 13,200 s.f. store began in early 2009. In mid-Jan. 2009 MacBoudille claimed this store would open before the Carousel de Louvre store. In July 2009 passersby noticed barricades carried a Uniqlo sign, a Japanese clothing retailer, putting Apple's plans in doubt. But shortly after, a Nov. 2008 approval was discovered by a Paris historical commission noting Apple's application.   12. Pudong - Shanghai - In 2009 a tipster said Apple had architectural plans for a circular store but no further information was received. Also in 2009 Apple said it would open two stores in Shanghai, but gave no location. In April 2010 a tipster said the first store will be inside the International Financial Center retail space. In June 2010 a tipster provided photos and a video to MacGeneration about the store, and a red "curtain" covering appeared over the 40-foot tall glass cylinder entrance.   13. Haywood Mall - Greenville, SC - This city's Apple store was originally planned for the 1.2 million s.f. Haywood Mall, but there was no appropriate space. So in August 2007 Apple switched to 670,000 s.f. Magnolia Park Town Center that was being created after the former mall was demolished along I-85. It would have been the second-largest mall in the state, with construction to start in late 2008 or early 2009, with Apple penciled in for a 5,100 s.f. space for Phase I at 550 S. Main St. But the economic slow-down halted demolition of Magnolia Park, and in March 2009 Apple store switched back to Haywood Mall, just 2 miles away from Magnolia Park, and signed a lease. Fayette Mall - Fayette/Lexington (Ken.) - In late Dec. 2009 a job listing appeared for this 1.2 million s.f., "super regional" mall with over 160 shops southwest of this dual city with a trade population of 758,000. The area benefits from its horse racing industry ("Horse Capital of the World"), Univ. of Kentucky (2 miles north), and large coporate offices and factories.   15. Polaris Fashion Place - Columbus (OH) - This Glimcher-operated 1.5 million s.f. mall is near I-71 on the city's far north side.   16. Walnut Street - Originally reported in July 2004 as 1727 Walnut St. in the Rittenhouse Row district of downtown, formerly Borders Books, but in 2005 determined to become an H&M store. In 2006 the focus shifted to 1619 Walnut, but in Oct. 2009 a local blogger received a tip that Apple dropped plans for 1619, and had leased 14,139 s.f. at 1607-09 Walnut St., a former 2-story, masonry banking institution building, 40' wide x 117' deep. The building (circa 1883) was originally a neo-Renaissance residence for noted lawyer John Campbell Harris. Rendering submitted by Apple show an all-glass storefront, but retaining the stone façade.   17. Covent Garden - London (UK) - In Dec. 2007 tipsters pointed to Covent Garden for a future store, which the district's Web site describes as "London's most vibrant." It's home to hundreds of restaurants and shops. In March 2008 Estates Gazette reported it would occupy a former Rock Garden space (#1 The Piazza, northwest James St. & Kings St.) on three levels, reportedly one of the largest and most expensive leasings ever in the area. It would be the third London store and the second in city centre--the Regent Street store is about one mile east. In mid-July 2008 Apple filed planning documents with the city of Westminster (read news story here, download pdf planning drawings). In Oct. 2008 Apple filed documents with the city saying construction would begin Jan. 15, 2009 and finish within 11-15 months.   21. La Maquinista - Barcelona (Spain) - In Feb. 2010 job listings appeared without warning for a store at an unknown location. However, tipsters pointed to the La Maquinista mall about 4 miles northeast of city center. The mall was built in 2000 and features 230 shops over 658,000 s.f., in an open-air format. El Paseo Village - Palm Desert (CA) - In early July, 2008 a tipster pointed to the Web site of a mall developer, which said Apple would occupy inside this add-on to the existing mall, Gardens on El Paseo. The city is in the resort area east of LA, and near Palm Springs. This new street-level shopping area will have 70,000 s.f. operated by Davis Street Land Company. However, tipsters pointed to the enormous Xanadu Shopping Mall & Skiing Center, about 15 miles southwest of city center. The mall has 250 shops, a multi-screen cinema, and 30 restaurants in 1 million s.f., set on a 225-acre development. Yes, it has a huge indoor snow recreation area for skiing and snowboarding. Boise Town Square - Boise (ID) - In the middle of a huge Pacific northwest blackout zone, this General Growth mall is southwest of downtown along I-184, and serves a metro population of 600,000.   27. Le Gru (Italy) - A city of 865,000 in the far northwest of the country, surrounded by the Alps, and former host for the Olympic Winter Games. The mall—reportedly the largest in Italy—has 180 shops in 925,000 s.f. Job listings posted March 27, 2010. Trivia: Apple originally listed the store name as "Grugliasco, Le Gru," for the city of location and mall name.   28. Xidan Joy City - Beijing (China) - A 13-story modern glass shopping center just northwest of the Forbidden City. Besides a wide range of international retailers, the complex includes apartments and a hotel on upper floors. Hong Kong Plaza - Shanghai (China) - During the July 2008 Sanlitun (Beijing) grand opening, Ron Johnson mentioned Shanghai city would have a store, and at the Louvre opening said two stores would open there. In Feb. 2010 COO Tim Cook confirmed that a store would open during summer 2010 (Pudong). In early 2010 tipsters pointed to Huang Huai Road in west Shanghai for the #2 store, possible at Hong Kong Plaza. Centro - Oberhausen (Germany) - Billed as Europe's largest shopping and leisure center (but only about 750,000 s.f. of retail), including an aqua park, cinema, model trains and more in the northwest region of the country.   34. River Park Square - Spokane (WA) - An independent, three-level mall in city center, facing the city's main park and the Spokane River. The mall has been the subject of numerous lawsuits involving the city and other parties, centered on federally-back loans from the city to the developer. Otherwise, the 1970-era mall has been remodeled several times, becoming the centerpiece for the downtown's revitilization, drawing from a 1.2 million trade area, including Canada. Chinook Centre - Calgary (Alb., Canada) - During his Feb. 22, 2006 podcast of "Your Mac Life," Shawn King said an unnamed Apple employee officially confirmed a future store in this city of 1 million residents, and the destination for 5 million tourists a year. The mall south of downtown has 1.1 million s.f., and includes 200 stores, 4 restaurants, 19 other eateries, a bowling centre and multi-screen cinema. It was built in 1960 and renovated in 2001 for $300 million. It has the third-highest sales per-square-foot of Canada's malls, behind Yorkdale and Eaton Centre, both also Apple store locations. As of March 13, 2006 a lease had not been signed, but the mall was in talks with Apple. Lease signed in Dec. 2006 for 33'x110' space (3,651 s.f) on ground floor near the center of the mall in former Reitman's space. Job listings posted May 6, 2007. But after that, the location dropped off the radar. A load-bearing pillar within the space could not be removed as Apple requested, tipsters said, so the project was put on hold. However, in Jan. 2010 a job listing appeared for the store, indicating that was again viable, to be constructed in a two-level, 180,000 s.f. expansion area.   36. Charlestown Square - Australia - October 21 - Located on the coast 100 miles north of Sydney, this city has the largest coal exporting harbor in the world. In April 2010 job listings appeared for the city, but without any specific location. Within weeks the listing listed this mall, which is undergoing a major redevelopment, with 110 new shops (280 total) covering 947,000 s.f. on three levels. Lincoln Park -Chicago (IL) - October 23 - On June 29, 2007 ChicagoBusiness Web site said Apple was in negotiations with M Development LLC for some part of an 18,400 s.f. triangular space at the intersection of Halsted, Clybourn and North Streets on the city's near north side, about 1 mile from the existing North Michigan Avenue store. The lot was a BP service station (1560 N. Halsted St.), in the midst of an area that is rapidly being developed. On Nov. 17, 2008 the city issued a permit to demolish the gas station building under the address 801 W. North Ave., and work began the same day. In early April 2009 ChicagoBusiness said Apple had signed a long-term lease on 18,000 s.f. for $725,000 a year. They said Apple will erect a 15,000 s.f. single-level store (ground + basement) on the triangle. By Oct. 2009 much of the structural steel had been erected, revealing a rectangular building with entrances on the north and west sides. The latter leads onto a new plaza leading to the adjacent CTA subway station building, which Apple agreed to rennovate for nearly $4 million. In Dec. 2009 Apple spokesperson Amy Barney confirmed the store to RedEye, calling it the "Lincoln Park" store.   • 6th Street - Austin (TX) - On March 8, 2011 press reported that Apple would open a temporary, "pop-up" store at 101 W. 6th St. in the downtown district, to coincide with the 2-week, annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Music and Arts Festival.   2. Saint-Catherine - Bordeaux (France) - A port city of about 1 million residents in southwest France. In May 2010 tipsters told MacBidouille that Apple has leased a former banking location at the very busy and conspicuous corner of Rue St. Catherine and Place de la Comedie. The site is along a pedestrian mall and not far from the city's Grand Theater and busy plazas. The 4-level building features a very tall first level, suggesting Apple's typical mezzanine design could be installed in the space. The Oracle - Reading (UK) - A mid-town shopping center 40 miles west of London with 775,000 s.f. of retail space in 120 shops, anchored by Debenhams, House of Fraser and Boots, along with 90 other retailers. It features an 880-foot riverside promenade on the River Kennet, with 25 restaurants, cafes and bars with outdoor seating, accompanied by a 10-screen cinema.   8. The Americana at Brand - Glendale (CA) - In late April 2011 a tipster said that an Apple store would open in this Main Street-style mall, just 600 feet from the existing store. Other tipsters said the existing store would not close, but that this store would become a "sister" location to the #2 store in the chain.   9. Westfield Southland - Melbourne (Australia) - In late April 2011 a job listing appeared for this huge, 1.3 million s.f. mall south of city center. The mall has nearly 360 retailers, a cinema and several restaurants. As of its grand opening, the store is the most south in the chain (38°S.). Grand opening August 13, 2011.
  10. I Gili - Florence (Italy) - In Jan. 2011 a job listing appeared for this historic northern city, but with no details on an exact location other than city center. However, in May 2011 an Italian Web site spotted a black construction barricade IFO the former Mondadori store at the Centro Commerciale I Gigli shopping mall. Conestoga Mall - Waterloo (Ont.), Canada - In Jan. 2011 a black construction barricade appeared in front of space #138, the former Fairweather women's clothing store (46' wide, 4,537 s.f), and also part of the Le Chateau store next door (which renovated within the last year itself).   12. Fashion Place - Murray (UT) - A General Growth mall near I-15 south of Salt Lake City. It draws visitors from a wide, an affluent area (avg. HH income $76,098), and is near the Univ. of Utah. The mall has 880,000 s.f. and has been renovated twice, expanded once, and a future upgrade will add even more space. In Nov. 2010 rumors of the location were confirmed. Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall - Anchorage (Alaska) - In Jan. 2011 tipsters pointed to the Fifth Avenue Mall operated by Simon as a future store location, possible in the space on the second level near the skybridge to Nordstrom that Eddie Bauer vacates on Feb. 1, 2011 (they'll move downstairs). The 1987-era mall serves a region of 360,000 residents with 446,000 s.f. on five levels. As of its grand opening, the store is the most north store in the chain (61°N.).   15. Festival Place - Basingstoke (UK) - A city center mall built in 2002 about 50 miles southwest of London, with 1.1. million s.f. and 165 shops. In late March 2011 job listings were posted, indicating an Oct. 2011 grand opening. Construction underway on the second level, spaces 65-66. Grand opening Aug. 20, 2011.   16. 4th Street - Berkeley (CA) - In Oct. 2010 a local Web site reported Apple was talking to city officials about a building at 1823 Fourth St., a busy 2-block section in the west part of the city. On Nov. 18th Apple filed a building permit application to remodel the 1-level building, taking out the mezzanine, adding a partial second floor, and expanding the current set-back ground level out to the sidewalk, for a total of 7,617 s.f.   17. Carré Sénart - Lieusant (France) - In early Feb. 4 a tipster pointed to this two-level mall with 130 shops 30 milies south of Paris. The mall is operated by Unibail-Rodamco, the same company that operates the Carrousel du Louvre mall where Apple has located. Unknown exact location within the mall. Job listings posted mid-February.   18. Northlake Mall - Charlotte (NC) - On May 21, 2011 a job listing appeared for a new store in this city, which already has a store at SouthPark. No location was mentioned in the listing, but sources located a building permit that identified this 1 million s.f. mall as this mall near I-485 and I-77 north of the city. The permit listed the construction cost as $1.77 million, substanially more than usual. The mall has 150 retailers and multi-screen cinema. The store will be in space #280, the former Arden B women's clothing store on the second level, and could incorporate space to the right side.   19. Promenade at Chenal - Little Rock (AR) - A 330,000 square-foot, open-air lifestyle center built by RED Development on the city's west side. The architecture is French gothic, and the tenant list includes common Apple neighbors. Mall opened Spring 2008. Tenant list was posted May 2007 with "Apple" listed. In Nov. 2007 Apple filed for a plumbing permit on a 4,570 s.f. space, indicating construction could soon be underway. Job listings posted Jan. 8, 2008. But in May, 2008 tipster says that Apple has not signed a lease and were looking at other locations. By April 2010 local tipsters said this appears to be a dead location. However, in late Oct. 2010 a report in Arkansas Business said the project is again on-track, and that a lease would be signed soon. In March 2011 local press again said Apple will be a future tenant, possibly in fall 2011. Finally, on March 25, 2011 job listings were posted. Grand opening Aug. 27, 2011.   20. City-Galerie Augsburg (Germany) - This city of 260,000 residents is in the south of Germany, about 40 miles northwest of the existing Munich store. A job listing appeared on March 30, 2011, but without any specific location. In July, the listing was changed to confirm this 430,000 s.f. shopping mall in city center (Willy Brandt Platz 1), with 105 shops, restaurants, cinema and other attractions.   21. Campania - Naples (Italy) - In April 2011 a job listing link appeared on the Italy job Web site for this city on the southern coast, without any specific location. However, the link was not active until May 25th. Later a construction barricade appeared inside the 1.5 million s.f. Centro Commerciale Campania mall about 18 miles north of the city.   22. Mapleview Centre - Burlington (Canada) - A 2-level Ivanhoe Cambridge-operated mall with 625,000 s.f. and 154 shops at the western shore of Lake Ontario, and not far from Niagara Falls. The mall was renovated in early 2010. Unknown space within the mall, but either BB33/223, formerly Jacob (relocating) or AA37/216, formerly Dynamite. Job listings posted Feb. 21, 2011.   23. Stratford City - London (UK) - An enormous shopping development under construction adjacent to the future 2012 Olympic Village and stadium in eastern London. At 1.9 million s.f., developer Westfield bills it as "the largest urban shopping centre in Europe," with huge anchor tenants It's located at a major highway and rail crossroads, and will have pedestrian connections in all directions, including to the Olympic venues, offices, entertainment venues, apartments, hotels and parks. Via Rizzoli - Bologna (Italy) - In Nov. 2010 a newspaper reported Apple will occupy two levels in city center an historic corner building (Casa Commerciale Barilli, 1906-07)) at Via Francesco Rizzoli 16 that Apple is upgrading and renovating.   25. Jungfernstieg - Hamburg - In Dec. 2009 the German newspaper Die Welt said Apple intends to open a high-profile store in the city center of this city. In April 2010 the newspaper Abendblatt says the store could appear at 12 Jungfernstieg, site of the country's oldest jewlery store, Brahmfeld & Gutruf, founded in 1834. The location is across a wide roadway from the Binnenalster, a lake formed from the former Alster River, and now a recreational and marina area.   27. Cielo Vista Mall - El Paso (TX) - In late Oct. 2010 a tipster pointed to this city as the eventual location for a store, but it wasn't until mid-June 2011 that it was confirmed. The mall covers 1.2 million s.f. on two indoor levels with 140 shops along I-10 east of downtown. The trade area's average household income is among the three lowest in the chain. But international sales possibilities are high, and the city is among the four Experian top-ranked without an Apple store. Probably located in space E10 (former Coldwater Creek) on the ground level. Nanjing East- Shanghai (China) - In Sept. 2010 real estate sources pointed to this new 22-story Henderson Metropolitan building at 155 Nanjing East Road as the future home for an Apple store, along the city's main shopping street, and within blocks of the famous The Bund, a wide avenue of historic buildings that is a major tourist attraction. IFC Mall - Hong Kong (China) - This city has been a glaring omission since the first Apple store opened, and only in 2010 did Apple's Ron Johnson confirm during the Pudong (Shanghai) grand opening that a store would appear here. In Feb. 2011 Vinko.com reported that Apple will occupy the IFC Mall in the central district, two levels in spaces #1100-1103, and #2091-2095. Two days later the South China Morning Post confirmed the IFC location and one at Hysan Place. Lower level enclosed with one entrance on the mall side, glass windows to outside.   33. New Haven (CT) - In late April 2011 a job listing appeared for a future store in this city, with a ZIP Code that includes the downtown district and Yale University. Within a month local reporters confirmed the store would be within a renovated space at the Yale University bookstore. The state is the fourth-wealthiest in the country, and Yale is considered among the most prestigious universities in the world. The space will include the basement and ground floor.   34. MetroTown - Burnaby, BC Canada - In April 2011 a job listing appeared for this mall about 8 miles southeast of Vancouver city center and the existing Pacific Centre Apple store. The enormous, 1.7 million s.f. Ivanhoe Cambridge mall is the country's second largest, and has 450 retailers over three levels.   • Greene Street - New York City (NY) - In late July 2011 sources pointed to the 1893-era, ornate and architecturally-significant building at 72 Greene St. as the temporary location for the SoHo store while it's being expanded over the next 9-12 months.. The new building is just 1½ blocks south of the SoHo store. Apple will occupy the cellar, ground and second levels, with upper floors remaining apartments. The project will cost nearly $1.4 million.     1. Main Taunus Zentrum - Sulzbach (Germany) - In July 2010 several German Web sites pointed to this 1964-vintage mall 15 minutes northwest of city center Frankfurt along the A66 highway. It has about 1.2 million s.f. with 170 shops. The Apple store will be in the northern section of the new expansion space that opens the same day as the Apple store. Job listings were posted July 15, 2011. Grand opening November 17, 2011.
    2. La Cañada - Marbella (Spain) - In early May 2011 a job listing appeared for this shopping mall in this busy seaside tourist town (pop. 135,000) about 65 miles from the Straits of Gibraltar. The city is along the Costa del Sol, which attracts visitors from around the world, but particularly the UK, Germany and France. Marbella also hosts celebrities who visit and reside here, and it's the subject of many films and TV shows. The mall has 150 shops, a large supermarket, a bowling alley, fitness gym and multi-screen cinema. Apple will reportedly occupy the former Habitat space, which is closing down.     3. Valencia (Spain) - In Jan. 2010 real estate sources told ABC.es that Apple would open a retail store at 25 Carrer de Cristóbal Colon in city center, across from the large El Corte Inglés department store. Apple's architects are reportedly obtaining permits to renovate and upgrade the historic apartment building designed by noted Spanish architect Lucas Garcia Cardona in 1889. The building is set on the corner of an angled intersection, providing the building with great exposure. The buildling features wrought-iron balconies, masonry details and a upper-level "viewing room." The sources say the store will open in 2010, making it the first Apple store in Spain. In May 2010 news accounts said city officials just approved construction permits, balancing the building's heritage and Apple's plans.     4. Grand Central - New York City - In early Feb. 2011 The New York Observer reported Apple was interested in retail space inside the transportation station. The historic building dates to 1871 and has 68 retail spaces (most under 1,000 s.f.) and 35 restaurants. In mid-Feb. tipsters said the store would be Apple's largest, and might be located on the mezzanine level, although finding 30,000+ s.f. seems to be difficult. Within weeks it was explained Apple would have to bid against others to occupy the space. In late May the Wall Street Journal said Apple was still interested in the space. On July 20, 2011 the NY Times said Apple submitted a retail proposal to the MTA, and it could be approved the next week. On July 23rd the NY Post said the deal had been inked: $800,000 for the first 10 years, over $1 million after that, for the east and northeast balconies. Amsterdam - Amsterdam (The Netherlands) - In Nov. 2010 multiple sources told One More Thing that Apple would occupy the ground floor and mezzanine of the 1909-era Hirsch Building at Leidseplein 25 in this capital city. Apple Benelux offices already occupy the upper floors. The building overlooks a major plaza and the city's tram line runs in front of the building. The interior is now used as a temporary art gallery, and resembles the Opéra (Paris) space.     6. Highland Village - Houston (TX) - In July 2010 a tipster pointed to this relatively small mall southwest of downtown and near I-610, and about one mile from the existing Houston Galleria store. It includes several upscale retailers. The space is the former Harold Powell clothing store, directly east of the new Sprinkles Cupcakes store, and will bear some resemblance to the Scottsdale Quarter store. Store construction was underway in late 2010, and by April 2011, it turned into a nearly-complete demolition of the building (which seems to be a change from the original plans to use the former building). The store will be a twin to the Upper West Side (NYC) store, with stone walls, two tall glass storefronts and a vaulted glass roof. Confluence - Lyon (France) - An enormous 350-acre urban project at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers, which will include residential, office, open space, waterways, public buildings, and retail developments (1.3 million s.f.). Over 25 years, the development is intended to extend and improve the city-center with new urban concepts. The store will be at 112 Cours Charlemagne in a huge, 2-level retail and entertainment building managed by Unibail-Rodamco, and alongside a mooring basin that lends a water theme to the location. Galleria Porta di Roma (Rome, Italy) - A black construction barricade was spotted in late 2011 at this development north of city center, which will eventually encompass office space, apartments and a shopping center over 370 acres.     9. Gran Plaza 2 - Madrid (Spain) - In late Feb. 2012 a local Web site said that Madrid store employees confirmed a store would open inside this new mall northwest of the city.     10. Nueva Condomina- Murcia (Spain) - The town of 450,000 is on the southeast coast, about two hours south of the existing Callé Colon (Valencia) store. Initial job listings did not name the mall, but tipsters filled in the information --inside the Nueva Condomina shopping mall north of city center, in spaces 55 and 56 on the upper level.
