The fifth largest city in Canada will host a second Apple retail store next summer when the Southgate Centre store opens in Edmonton (Canada) during June 2010. The 1970-era mall south of downtown has been expanded several times over the years, including a 150,000 square-foot addition that opened last August. Now the mall has about 165 shops and restaurants serving the 1 million residents in the metro region. The future store will be about seven miles southeast of the existing West Edmonton Mall Apple store, which opened in July 2008.

You suggest that Edmonton has 3.7 million residents. This is the population of the entire Province of Alberta, including Edmonton and Calgary and all other centres and rural areas.
Toronto, which is the largest city in Canada has about 2.8 million, with 5 million in the Greater Toronto Area.
What Robert said is true. Edmonton is actually shy of 1 million excluding the surrounding area. But I wonder why they are building another one. West Ed is busy and special, leave it as such. [IFO - Thanks Robert and Pat for the population correction. I've edited it to reflect 1 million residents in the metro area.]
I think they’re putting one in Southgate, because well… “Southgate is the new WEM” as one of my friends said…
REALLY, the people who go to WEM are tourists… I personally avoid it, and would rather go anywhere else other than WEM…
Southgate is more a ‘local’ mall, as well it’s more geared towards the ‘upper class’ish… (all the fancy high end stores) a lot of WEM exclusive stores are now in there… as well as some southgate only…
Kinda interesting though… us getting a second apple store… especially when they’re not _THAT_ far apart… wonder where they’re opening it…
and I’m just curious… where did they get the “June 2010″ date from?
why no london ontario.. ugh
“[...] the people who go to WEM are tourists…”
Yep, when we lived a few blocks away from WEM we called it West Edmonton Maul.

*laughs*, I just call it the mall of Doom…
So long WestWorld Computers…
From what I had heard talking with my friend on this Southgate was suppose to be the location that Apple wanted to put an Apple Store in first and not WEM. The problem was that Southgate just didn’t have the space available.
Southgate has the 2nd or Third highest foot traffic in Edmonton.
Any details as to when in June it is schedule to open?
