Construction on the future Upper West Side (NYC) retail store has been completed and the staff is in training for grand opening day, when the building’s amazing architecture will be fully revealed. Tipsters say the store could open on November 20th, coinciding with Apple’s preference for a 6 p.m. Friday opening for its high-profile stores. Photos of the store show an amazing and distinctive curved glass roof, set into a nearly-triangular corner at 67th Street and Broadway. The wide sidewalk in front of the store has been completely redone to provide an audience-sized space in front of the curtain of glass. The storefront and sidewalk is still blocked off, and is being constantly patrolled by security guards. Photos after the break.
Thanks to Adam and Yosef for these photos.
This view shows what the store looks like from the intersection, with a huge stone wall to the left, and what will be an impressive glass façade to the right.

This amazing view by Adam shows how the façade extends outward from the U-shaped stone side walls, the upward curve of the glass roof and the angle of the glass at the left street intersection.

I don’t know if this is a problem at Fifth Avenue.. but.. that roof looks like a target just waiting for pigeons…
@guest. good point! but the glass on the roof looks like it is frosted, so i’m not sure this will be much of an issue. it will depend somewhat on the distance of the roof from the floor i suppose. but it does raise the question about cleaning all that glass…
Apple has cleaning crews that never rest. A shit laden roof will not even slow them down. They’ll be out wee-geein’ that crap up every am and pm. Steve wouldn’t have it any other way.
I assume the glass is strong enough to support a couple of window washers. Maybe Apple has a deal that will let them construct a boom on one of the adjacent buildings that will allow a guy to be tethered down to the glass surface.
I remember in the early days of the Third Street Promenade [Santa Monica, CA] store, I saw what was a considerable amount of pigeon and/or seagull poop dripping down the stainless steel facade of the store. I made what I thought was a best guess as to Ron Johnson’s (VP of Retail) email address. Well, the mail didn’t bounce and about three days later the facade was spotless. A) Dumb luck??? B) Coincidence??? Perhaps.

Do you know what they use (material) to cover the glass? Who do they get it from. I remember seeing the video where they used that stuff for the glass cube — too forever to remove!

Andy,
the company that is creating and constructing all of the apple store glass elements – inside (staris, …) and outside (facade, …) – is the german based “SEELE” glasmanufacturer.
on their website (www.seele.com) you get lots of infos and additional pictures about the different apple stores…

I have experienced on several occasions when I buy either plastic sheet, or stainless steel sheet metal that a plastic skin is adhered to the surface. No or virtually no residue is left when the protective membrain is removed. I see lots of glass transported by truck and the vast majority of the time I see no protective covering on it whatsoever. Nothing on the scale of the cube in NYC. One huge glass project that I did see was the renovation of the escalator banks at the Beverly Center here in LA. Yes the same Bev Ctr where my favorite Apple Store is–a whole lot less crowded due to the 1.1 mile distance from The Grove. I’m talking 5 elevators end to end climbing 5 stories. There are two nearly identical banks of them. A lot more glass than 5th Ave in NYC. Unfortunately I was never there when they where installing a single sheet of glass. Somewhat similar hardware is used as what holds the glass staircases together. Go to http://www.beverlycenter.com. I’m sure there is at least a couple of good pictures. The escalators are kind of their trademark.
Can’t wait anymore !!! The palace of Apple!!! Marvelous …
