Canada-US Store Openings This Weekend

September 22, 2009

Apple will hold a triple Canada—United States grand opening this Saturday as stores in Temecula (S. Calif.), Vancouver (BC) and suburban Montreal (QC) throw open their doors. The store at the Promenade at Temecula is located in an expansion area of the mall along Interstate 15 between San Diego and Los Angeles. The store will help extend coverage between the two metro areas, particularly inland of the Pacific Ocean. Further north, the city of Vancouver will receive its second store at the Oakridge Centre, just four miles from the existing Pacific Centre store. The Oakridge mall is the largest in the city, with 150 shops. Just west of Montreal, the Pointe Claire store will join 200 other shops at the huge mall, and will be the third store in the region. The Oakridge and Pointe Claire stores will open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the Temecula store will open 30 minutes later.

I wonder which mall entrance will open early. I plan to get there early by getting off the Oakridge – Cambie Street/41st Avenue Canada Line station. IMHO by frontage of the black hoarding the Apple Store looks wider than the Pacific Centre one. The depth is similar since I used the walkway between the AS and the Bay. There is no storage in the back since there is a service walkway for all the stores on that side of the West Galleria. Directly behind the AS is the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre on the other side of the service walkway.

Another Canadian Apple Store is opening this weekend in Pointe-Claire, QC/PQ (French abbreviation for Province of Quebec).
Due to the time zone the Quebec opening is earlier at Saturday, September 26 at 9:00 a.m. EDT.

I went to Oakridge yesterday at 5 p.m. to find the black hoarding gone. I have no photographs since I did not expect this. Last year at Pacific Centre the hoarding did not come down until after the 9 p.m. closing Friday night. Apple Store Oakridge Centre is over double size of Pacific Centre by width. The depth is about the same. To each side are white walls of about 20 feet. The left white wall has a door with no door knob on the mall side. The right white wall has a door knob with no big metal security plate around it. Inside there were about 50 employees (I assume). Most were not wearing Apple clothing.
Some staff were hanging 4 feet tall models of the newest iPod nano (with camera) on a track system in the floors and ceilings near the glass doors.
There are 3 aisles of tables going down the length. There is no theatre. The Genius Bar is double size compared to Pacific Centre. There is a large lit
Apple logo above the glass doors. A sign on a metal stand says the opening is September 26 at 9:30 a.m. Behind the store there are two doors to the service walkway. Both had big metal security plates around the door knob area.

Two guys rolled out a scaffolding from inside. They wore gray Stuart Dean (http://www.stuartdean.com/) T shirts. One was really talkative. Apple employees are under Non Disclosure Agreement. If these guys were under NDA they were not obeying it. They were from the U.S. and been to other Apple Stores.
They are under contract to clean the special Apple metal. Two other crews are working at Promenade at Temecula and Pointe Claire. They were dipping pink ‘Scott Shop Towels” into a liquid (not soapy) in buckets. Behind both white walls is storage. Behind the ordinary door knob is a “closet”. Behind the Genius Bar and the service walkway is the staff area. They were both there when the black hoarding came down after 9 p.m. Thursday, September 24. Apple did not want to pay overtime for September 25.

I found out from security which doors opens at 7:30 a.m.

I now leave for Vancouver.

They should’ve opened up one in Metrotown instead of Oakridge… the largest mall in a 400 mile radius.
