Long List of Stores Being Remodeled

August 11, 2009

Apple continues to focus its retail attentions on upgrading existing stores, more than opening stores at new locations. And there is now a long list of stores closed for remodeling, along with several that will receive future make-overs. Right now, the following stores are closed for remodeling: Saddle Creek, Walden, Mayfair, Twelve Oaks, Southdale, Walnut Creek, Barton Creek, Annapolis, Perimeter and The Pier. The closures range from 10 days to nearly three weeks, and involve stores that opened before August, 2006. Tipsters say that International Plaza (Fla.) will also close soon for a remodel. Company officials say they intend to remodel 100 stores this fiscal year. So far, Apple has remodeled at least 50 stores over the past two years.

What i’d like to learn about is what happens to the store fixtures, tech, etc. that are removed from the old stores. They really can’t be repurposed as they are now “old”. Where do they go? Example – when all the projection walls were closed down, what happened to all the projectors and the projection mirrors, video switching equipment, etc. Another example: a while back, the window displays had a cool LED bar with rotating colors. Now that they’ve been changed to something new, what happened to all that cool LED lighting? Ebay? Scrap (please tell me no!)?

Inquiring minds want to know!

@Mark, either trash or sent back to Apple.

The Woodfield store was remodeled, not sure when, and they took out ALL the center shelves and put in more computer display tables, and it’s a way more open store. Problem is, with the rest of the store what it is (white walls, bright lighting, stainless steel) it’s even More sterile now. Does anyone else want to see more of a “homey” feel in our stores? IDK how they’d do that, but I’d like to see it. A picture of Woodfield can be found here: http://images.apple.com/retail/images/store_photos/photo_woodfield.jpg

The article has a factual error. The Twelve Oaks store is not closed “right now.” It will close at the end of business on Sunday, Aug 16, and open again on Sept. 5.

To me, it makes no sense to close “The Pier” store in Atlantic City in the middle of August. The busiest times in Atlantic City are the summer months, when everyone is down at the casinos and beach. Why not wait until October or November when the store is not as busy. I’ve been to this store in the summer months, and in the winter months and it’s not even close in the amount of traffic the store gets.
