Tax Holidays Mean Longer Store Hours

August 6, 2009

The last weeks of summer point to the start of school for millions of students, and also two big, annual promotions at the Apple retail stores: a free iPod with the purchase of any Macintosh, and longer stores hours to take advantage of tax-free shopping days in 10 states. The free iPod offer is linked to the purchase of any Mac using an education discount (higher-education student or K-12/higher-ed staff). A customer buys the Mac and their choice of a qualifying iPod, and can then obtain a rebate for the iPod by applying on-line. This offer expires September 8th. While 19 states offer tax-free holidays to help reduce back-to-school expenses, not all include computers among the qualifying purchases. In those states that do, Apple stores will generally open two hours early, and close one or two hours later than usual. In some cases the holiday runs for one or two consecutive weekends, in others the holiday encompasses four consecutive days–check the exact dates and qualifications, and also surf Apple’s own tax holiday Web page.
