First Microsoft Store Locations Announced

July 28, 2009

Microsoft announced that it will open its first two retail stores in Scottsdale (Ariz.) and at The Shops at Mission Viejo south of Los Angeles. As first reported by Cnet, Microsoft also intends to take the retail initiative “global,” although a spokesperson declined to say in which countries and how soon. It’s not clear exactly where the stores will be located. The Mission Viejo store opened in 2004 at store #76. Apple opened an impressive store last month at Scottsdale Quarter.

Let’s hope they are near a Staples or Office Depot in case they run out of copying machine ink.

Let’s all get to the grand opening really early, wait in line and then when the store opens, walk away.
“Well it looked an Apple store!”

Betty – if my records are correct, Mission Viejo has never been remodeled. You’re correct that an update is advisable! I’ll be at that mall on Thursday to gather intel, photos and maybe some video.

Mark, I Love the idea!! I bet Microsoft will be giving away 10 copies of Vista so that everyone in line will bet a free item. I’m down for bringing my MBP, Apple hat and Apple store shirt to the first Chicago location, just to get up and leave when they say Now Open.

If I was apple..

I would give out free iPod Nano’s on the grand opening day

just to bring more people to the apple store vs microsoft store

maybe 500 iPods? or even 1000

watch the people vs ms store

i think its a great idea!

Sorry Betty, while I’d like a free iPod, it’s a terrible idea. Even the grand opening contest at stores is just one laptop and one iPod. Also, 1,000, even just 500 iPods would cost Apple a fair chunk of change. Not like they could afford it, but it’s a useless waste of money. Lastly, who’s to say people wouldn’t just show up for the iPod and and then go to the MS store? I’d do the opposite; show up at MS and leave once it opens and head to the Apple store.

What I would like to hear is where MS would get income from. Those software kiosks? ANY hardware sales? Who would they sell? What specific computers and makers will be involved? Why start in Scottsdale? I have a feeling that all these answers will come in the form of a giant F, as in their retail “strategy” gets an F as a grade.
