Several sources have confirmed that the Barton Creek (Tex.) retail store will close at the end of business on Sunday, August 1st, and the entire operation will then move 3.3 miles into a larger space at West 6th Street and North Lamar Blvd by month’s end. The new, previously-identified location has been under construction for some time, but has not been pinpointed. However, it’s most likely on the property at the northeast corner owned by Schlosser Development Corp. The property includes a large building previously occupied by Whole Foods and new construction just north of that building. The store’s Web site seems to confirm the move, since the store’s activities calendar is completely empty beginning August 2nd.

I think you got this wrong. As far as everyone knows, the Barton Creek location is scheduled for a remodel, which will move the Genius Bar to the back of the store and add another display table. They are relocating the back of house storage to a location down the hall in the mall. This will allow for a larger Genius Room and break area as well as a better storage space for product. This remodel has been in the cards for months now.
Barton Creek is definitely scheduled for a remodel, it’s been a long time coming, it’s not closing.
When was the last time Apple Retail built a secret, stealth store – which is what you are proposing? What retail space have you guys not identified barely 6 weeks from opening? C’mon, this doesn’t pass the sniff test.
If ARS is going into the building that Whole Foods used to occupy, someone better alert Book People, REI, and Anthropology who occupy the lower 2 floors of the building.
As ‘mike’ said, Barton Creek has been cramped in the back of house since it opened. The store actually had a loft installed and remodeled the BOH just 6 months after opening to accommodate the store’s needs. The BOH was even renovated again to add more rolling racks and further make use of the space. For years, the store searched for a larger location within the mall or an offsite storage location. Alas, the old Barton Creek mall didn’t have much space available. The store experienced much more wear and tear (eg: cracking floors) than ever expected and had been in line for remodel for some time.
The store was going to be shut down for retrofit 2 years ago after the Domain was open, but it was postponed indefinitely. The real story here is that the store will be shut down on either end of it’s retrofit – right in the middle of back to school season at UT.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – Barton Creek is a <$30M location for Apple. The store is not going anywhere.
Might be time to update this story as 'rumor', cause it's not a fact.
Yea they have put the signs outside saying that they are getting the remodel.
I went down to the malls main office and got told that the remote storage is true and that they will not be moving out side the mall. With a little bit of pushing in the malls office I even found out that the remote storage is planned to be down the hall by nortstroms and a lease has already been signed for it.
Barton Creek apple is staying not moving. The only possibilities is that there is going to be a 3rd apple store in austin.
