Renovation Goes To Bare Walls

May 12, 2009

A black construction barricade went up yesterday at The Gateway store in Salt Lake City (Utah), and workers nearly gutted the inside in just one day, the start of a two-week renovation that will install the latest store interior design. A sign on the barricade refers visitors to Apple’s retail Web site, “to find the nearest Apple store.” In fact, the closest store is 423 miles away in Las Vegas, a six-hour drive. Other details of the renovation are unclear: How did Apple handle repairs before the store closed, either deferring them entirely, performing them elsewhere in the city, or sending them to other stores? Throughout this series of store renovations, it’s also unclear if Apple’s full and part-time employees continue to be paid during their store’s renovation. Update: Within a week after the store closed, the black covering over the east-facing windows captured the sunlight, heating up the front windows and creating cracks in the right-most pane. Before the store re-opens, the large pane will be replaced. Check renovation photos after the break.

The floor has been removed, along with all the furnishings and wall displays. Only the ceiling material and rear stainless steel are left.

I received more feedback about the staffing practices during a store renovation:

Part-timer’s have no hours during the work. Full timer employees have the option to go work at another store for the two weeks. Also, the Genius staff finishes up work and starts to ship all repairs a few days before the remodel begins.

and…

If employees get time at other Apple stores, then they are paid. But, if they don’t work, they don’t get paid. Many employees take this time an unpaid vacation time, which, at least, does not count against regular paid vacation. Of course, part-time workers do not get any paid vacation time, so for them it does not matter.

and…

Some people spending time at the Holyoke or Danbury stores.
