The 44th store in California will open this Saturday at 928 State Street in the coastal community of Santa Barbara. The store was constructed inside the historic shell of a building that features a covered sidewalk, and will be marked by an Apple flag flying from a mast out front. The single-level store will serve an upscale population that previously was at least 80 miles from the nearest Apple store. The doors will open at 10 a.m. and the first 1,000 visitors receive a commemorative T-shirt. Update: Have photos now, during or after the grand opening? Update: Three days before the opening, at least 2,000 residents of the town have been evacuated because of a wildfire in the foothills north of downtown. Stiff offshore winds are blowing smoke and ash over the city, while low humidity and rough terrain are hampering firefighting efforts. As of 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Apple store is just one block beyond a county evacuation warning area, and about six blocks from a mandatory area. Given the fire, evacuations, possible electric power interruptions and the effect of the fire on the store employees, it’s likely the grand opening will be postponed. [evacuation area map]
