Second Store Planned for Germany

February 5, 2009

Apple will open a retail store in Hamburg (Germany) later this year, the country’s second-largest city and a major destination for domestic and international travelers. The location decision oddly bypasses Berlin and Frankfurt for a port city with a metro population of almost five million residents. The exact location of the future store isn’t known, but there are many city-center locations in Hamburg that could rival the busy and scenic location of the Munich store that opened last December. Locals speculate the store could open on the  in the Alte Post-Building, whose three shops and café moved out at the end of last year, leaving an appropriate space for an Apple store near the town hall and other upscale shops. The store could open by mid-summer.

my guess is that a location close to the city center will be chosen…

the new Europa Passage Mall is a prime location…

http://europa-passage.de

the mall has 5 stories, parking and easy subway access… 30,000 square meters of space and right now 120 shops…

It’s not that surprising that Berlin was left out for now. The city is really poor. In fact, Hamburg, at half the population, has the same GDP as Berlin.

berlin might have less income, but it has a lot of bright minds… hamburg is not the city known for innovation and changes in society… rather the opposite…

i understand apples decision, but to blame it on income is a little far fetched… berlin has more tourism and a lot of those come from the east to berlin to shop… berlin also has better locations that would fit the apple store strategy… the rosentrasse store was a let down, the outside is rather ugly… in hamburg it will be the same story, only if apple installs itself in one of the malls with higher ceilings they will be able to install the aluminum look…

the mall @ berlin friedrichstrasse would be perfect for an apple store in berlin…!

smokeonit,

So what is Apple’s decision based on if not the fact that Hamburg is richer? You said that you understand Apple’s choice, but your reasoning sounds like you think Berlin would have been a better choice.

yes, berlin is bigger, has more tourist, is more vibrant in terms of culture and starting entrepreneurs…

from a message perspective berlin would be #1 priority that apple wants to be in germany and is in it for the long haul…

and i am thrilled that apple opened it;s 1st store in germany, but the rosenstrasse store is not as big a message as other locations, even in munich, could have been… the building design is somehow boring… reminds me of the american embassy in berlin, which because of budget cuts and security became the most ugly building @ “unter den linden”… a disgrace to the history of berlin and the message america should have sent to germany… same as apple in munich…

there’s some bold approaches in germany, and don;t forget bauhaus came from here… it’s not like germany isn;t a place that is easy to “shock and awe”…

If you think the Munich Store is boring you probably haven’t seen the average Apple Store. The Munich store is a rather big store. The interior is standardized across most Apple Stores. Remember, it’s not your church, and it’s not supposed to be art! Just a store.

Tom: i’m not refering to the interior… why would i??? it’ s the same in every store… the size is diferent, but the overall design is the same…

but the exterior is very different i many locations… that’s why i’m taling about… the glass front @ munich is nice, but the building with not details besides the small windows and fake shutter is super boring… i’d rather have a mix of old art deco or bauhaus style exterior than this nothingness of architecture… the architect did not make any effort to make the rest of the building nice…

and inside i was shocked that one has to ask to use the elevator, and can’t use it alone, an apple employee has to be present and a key is needed… “very” handicapped “friendly”…;-(

The location is Altertal-Einkaufszentrum (AEZ). See http://www.ifun.de/content/view/5522/1/ for a photo.
