New Packaging Makes Contents Obvious

December 21, 2008

Apple is switching to new small-product packaging that spotlights the contents with a nearly life-size photo of what’s inside the box. The all-black boxes are are appearing on Apple store shelves, and include the World Travel Adapter Kit, MagSafe Power Adapter and the full line of laptop batteries. The silhouette design makes it easier to spot the products on the tall, floor-to-ceiling accessory shelves of Apple stores, and also makes it obvious what’s included with the product. Several larger products, including Apple TV, have used a similar type of “X-ray” type box designs for the past year. Here are two of the new product packages that show the contents. Other products that use the new design include laptop batteries.

My first Mac – a 2003 PowerBook G4 12″ – had a similar layout of photos on it’s box. Plan view of the laptop from above, side views on the appropriate faces.

Mac packaging at least has been this way for a long time. I think my old keyboard box from the same year had several views too.

it’s definitely nice packaging, but apple has been using that style for many months now, at least since the start of this year…

These accessories (batteries, ac adapters, world travel kits, and others) use to come in generic white boxes with green labels. It was hard to decipher the batteries especially, since the model they were for was usually in small type on the back.

Its a good idea, although I’m sure the packaging is a little pricier…
