Larger Space Planned for NY Store

October 27, 2008

The Roosevelt Field (NY) retail store is tucked away at one end of the second floor in the huge mall, a location that Apple doesn’t prefer. Even so, the store has been doing well since it opened in July 2002. Now a much larger space has opened up in prime territory on the ground floor in the middle of the mall, where Restoration Hardware was located. It’s not clear when the store will move. Check the mall plan after the break.

The current store is located at one end of the mall on the second level, at a corner with a dead-end hallway.

The future location on the ground floor is much wider and larger, and is in the midst of mall action.

I had gone to this RF Apple Store during a summer weekday this year and it was a comfy enough store. It was somewhat crowded and certainly the size fit the crowd at the time. I was there to pick up a spare battery for my MacBook Pro. Although there were some people buying products, many appeared to be high-schoolers just playing with the computers and iPods. I would hardly have thought they would need to increase the size of the store, but that’s just my observation from one day at the store. Maybe weekends are even more crowded.

I suppose now is a good time for expansion since rents are probably cheaper in the mall.

I visit the Roosevelt Field store frequently and I would definitely say that they need a larger space, especially during the Christmas season. On numerous occasions I was forced to wait for a computer. However, I wouldn’t say it is all young high school students that are hogging up the products. It’s a mixture of everyone. Also, I think the store is in a weird location in the mall itself, so a move would be worth it. Apple could really use another retail store on Long Island, period. The wait for the Genius Bar alone is horrible at Roosevelt Field.

If they reopen a Apple Store in another location in the same mall, does Apple have another grand opening drawing and T-shirts that say (in this case Roosevelt Field) version 2.0?

I was there for their first grand opening.

Bradley Dichter — Sorry! No T-shirts or other extras for a re-opening. They just welcome you back to the larger store.
