Apple will add to this week’s already-announced grand opening festivities with a dual store opening in Canada: the Fairview Mall store will open in Toronto at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, and then the long-awaited Calgary store will open at the Market Mall store at 9:30 a.m. The new stores will bump Canada up to a nine-store country, surpassing Japan, whose seventh and latest store opened in June, 2006. A Calgary store was originally planned for a Fall, 2006 opening at the Chinook Centre, but a pesky architectural problem delayed or cancelled the project.

Ottawa, London for example in Ontario
I know it is your running joke, but London, Ontario may never get a store - the GTA will get at least 6 more before that happens and the other cities that have them already will get at least 2 or 3 more each. Ottawa will definitely get 2 or 3 before London gets one. The city of London and the metro area just don’t have the population to support one, especially when compared to the above cities and dozens of metro areas without stores in the U.S. that are larger.
London has a metro population of 452,000 with the surrounding areas
Plus a very large University of like 25,000 students with lots of money.
London could easily support a store.
Its 2 hours to toronto or 2 hours to detroit. A huge gap with no stores.
I thought apple wanted people within like 15 minutes of a store
According to this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_100_largest_metropolitan_areas_in_Canada
there are four metro areas in Canada that are larger than London, Ontario without any stores and two that are almost as large without any stores. Ottawa, Quebec City, Winnipeg, and Hamilton are all larger metro areas and have no Apple Stores. Hamilton is close to Toronto, but someone on the West side of Hamilton wouldn’t want to drive to Sherway if he or she did not have to.
Also, New Orleans, LA, New Haven, CT, Dayton, OH, El Paso, TX, Columbia, SC, and Akron, OH are some of the metro areas in the U.S. with more than 200,000 more people than London, ON and they have no Apple Stores. There are several others larger than London with no Apple Store.
Apple does want people within 15 minutes of an Apple Store. Right now about 1/2 of the U.S. population of over 300 million is within 15 miles or minutes (I’ve heard both) of an Apple Store. Since Canada’s population of about 33 million is spread out over a wider area, it might not be as simple or easy to make it so 1/2 of the population is within 15 minutes of a store. The best way to do it may be to put more stores in the major population centres of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City, Winnipeg, and Hamilton. The metro areas of those 9 cities contain over 16 million people - just about 1/2 the population of Canada. Throw in Windsor, ON, the Niagara region, and the Canadian communities near Seattle and you have more than 1/2 of the population within 15 miles of an Apple Store.
Interesting stats. One point though, Seattle is nowhere close to 15 miles/minutes from any Canadian community right on the US/Canada border. Still they have a mighty fine Apple store in University Village.
