Plans for a large retail store in the Georgetown section of the District of Columbia are moving forward slowly, with Apple presenting their latest proposal to the Old Georgetown Board that would demolish the existing 1980s building at 1229 Wisconsin Avenue NW and build a entirely new structure. An earlier proposal included only alterations to the existing façade, which formerly fronted a French Connection clothing store that was renovated in 2004. It’s likely Apple will do everything necessary to obtain permit approvals from the Board and turn the location into a high-profile retail store, since Apple reportedly paid $13 million for the 7,500 square-foot site, and the company has committed to spend millions more to construct a new building. It would be the first store within the District, although DC is ringed with several stores in Virginia and Maryland.

This is strange. I live 100 yards from this store and pass it every day. Frankly, it already looks like an Apple Store with an all white facade and tan hardwood floors. All they really need to do is replace the staircase with an Apple glass one and hang a large Apple logo in the store’s large two story glass top window. They are missing out on lots of potential sales by trying to build their own. Georgetown University is only a few blocks away and GW University is maybe 12-15 city blocks away. They should have this store in service before the Xmas season. It is located literally in the heart of georgetown and gets tons of foot traffic today as folks shop in the area. Sometimes I wonder if Apple’s strict control of everything interferes.
