Gary, you did a great job of capturing the awe, fun, and vibrancy of this store opening! And the music is great! Do you suppose Olivia Newton-John is a hopelessly devoted Apple Fan, too?

Great video! Now tell us; what camera, mic and editing program was used for this terrific video?

Great vid well filmed. BTW, I think they are opening an Apple store in Melbourne on the corner of La Trobe street and Elizabeth Street diagonally opposite Melbourne central. If you have lived in Melbourne you’ll know this build has empty for years but i walked past it a few days ago and it had some black blockade up in some parts it might not even be an Apple store but the building fits their bill. It is a early 1900s building with big windows. I looked in… it is a big space and they were putting up metal stud work anyway I guess we will find out if it is one or not.

The video was made with an older Canon Optura 30 camcorder that does standard definition, but in 16:9 format. In addition, I use a wide-angle conversion lens to get more into the frame. I use the built-in microphone, and then edit in Final Cut Express on a Powermac G5 dual 2 GHz. I gotta upgrade to one of the new SD-card Canon camcorders, but the video format is hard to edit directly.

Great, when Apple will open to Jakarta?

Apple Store June 30, 2008 at 4:06 am

Jakarta? Well…
Indonesia has one of the lowest percentages of use of Apple in the world. One of the biggest reasons is that it is a third-world nation. There really isn’t a personal computer market. Businesses, government or individuals for business reasons have computers. Students with parents in the financial position to do so will get their kids a computer for college. But that is it. And you pay for every minute on the Internet. No unlimited access.

Minimum wage is only a $100 a month and even college graduates may make just a $1000 a month.

Apple retail is designed for individuals and Windows converters. This market does not exist in a third-world country such as Indonesia. Their currency is weak so foreign items are expensive. I even saw one computer store that sold their items in US dollars so they would not be burned by changing exchange rates. Everything was the same price as the US. Even Epson printers that are made in Indonesia.
Eventually as Apple gains Worldwide market share over 10% they will have to have a presence in the World’s fourth-largest country. A metropolitan area of 16 million can’t be ignored. And maybe a tourist destination such as Bali with 3.2 million people and a million international visitors.

So I was looking through the phone book in Jakarta and could not find komputer (“C” is pronounced “ch” so they use a “K”). It was not there. Then I stumbled on it under “C”. Why would Indonesia use English in their own phone book? It finally dawned on me. If you use a computer in Indonesia, you work in English. Americans, imagine having to learn a foreign language to have a job and use a computer.
