Construction work on the future Royal Hawaiian (Honolulu) retail store has reached a mysterious point: What material will be used for the exterior wall of the store? The island is natural wonderland, with blue skies, majestic ocean waves and volcanic rocks. Workers installed a series of support brackets on the large wall to the left of the store entrance, and earlier this year installed panels of dark-colored stone. However, within weeks the stone came down, leaving the brackets now empty. Adjacent store walls are made of undistinctive, textured concrete. On-going Web coverage of the construction by Mark shows the original stone wall, and the current blank wall. His photos also show a strange Genius Bar arrangement, which appears to be–appropriately–an island. A photo after the break.
In this composite photo by Bruno, a black barricade hides the wall beyond the worker in the white shirt. However, you can see the wall on the left, and that it’s now not covered at all.

I really hope Apple does do something local. Whenever they do a personal touch to a store (sandstone in Chicago, brick for Knox Street, heck even the Green Monster theme with Boylston Street) the stores always turn out better than just with metal. Granted some of these design influence were probably more practical or forced than Apple’s idea, but still, I like the look of that stone and hope it stays.
