Blue Banner Appears Over Sydney Storefront

May 26, 2008

A giant, Bondi-blue banner has been placed over the three-story glass façade of the future George Street (Sydney, Australia) retail store, signaling that the store could open within weeks. The banner is of the same custom-made, 3M plastic material that covered the Boylston Street (Boston) glass storefront, and depicts a “wave” design made of iPods. Tipsters say the covering material is expensive, costing about $10 to $12 per square-foot, or about $25,000 for this 70-foot wide store. A tagline on the covering reads, “Drop in soon. Apple Store, Sydney.” Passersby say the inside of the store is still visibly “unfinished,” while local real estate and construction sources say the store will open in mid-June.

Thanks to Simon Tsang, Bradley and Cameron for these photos.

The design is a “wave” of iPods on a blue background, which might be described as Bondi blue, after the color of the ocean at the famous nearby beach. Notice the glass mounting hardware visible between the covering panels.

This photo shows the huge size of the glass façade, and how it protrudes from the building.

This view shows the massive nature of the façade when it’s covered. After the glass is revealed, the storefront will take on an entirely different look and feel.

@Cookie… lack of 3G on gen 1 iPhone is a fair enough reason to hold off. 3G iPhone will be released in Aus on multiple carriers in June. Probably when store is opened. Let’s hope Blackberry doesn’t ‘drop-in’ on Apple’s iPhone perfect wave

Installed overnight Sunday to Monday by 14 people on scissorlifts!

Walked pass and it was very impressive to see how fast this banner went up.

Big stickers in large strips.

I don’t think this could have been done in Melbourne…to bloody windy!
