Apple has announced that the Boylston Street (Boston) retail store will open this Thursday at 6 p.m., coinciding with an off-day for Boston Red Sox baseball players, some of whom might show up for the event. Previously, the only Thursday store opening was at stores in brand-new malls, since Thursday is a traditional mall opening day. The weather forecast is “iffy” for late in the week, with 30 percent chance of showers, according to some forecasters, with highs in the low 60s, and overnight lows in the high 40s. According to information provided to the Boston Globe, the store will have extended hours, but won’t be open 24/7. The roof will feature a vegetation garden, and the store will cover about 20,000 square-feet. The newspaper quotes Sr. VP Retail Ron Johnson as saying that over 5,000 persons applied for the store’s 165 job positions. Apple’s announcement of the opening says they’ll be giving away commemorative T-shirts and ”some surprises.” Attending the grand opening? More info after the break.
For those attending the grand opening, Apple will absolutely not be giving away any products to the first “x” number of people in line, as some believed at the 14th Street (NYC) opening. They also will not be offering any reduced prices on products on opening day. If any products are awarded, it will be the result of a random give-away. At the 14th Street opening, the first 2,500 attendees received a commemorative poster in a tube. When you removed one of the plastic caps on the tube, your prize, if any, was indicated by a sticker. There were reportedly two laptops awarded, along with a few iPods and lots of iTunes gift cards.

Of course, now we just have to tell the radio announcers NOT say that!! :D
Does anyone know when people are going to start lining up for this shindig?
For the 14th st opening, I lined up at around two pm on that day and was in the first 200 people in line. Assuming half of the people don’t think they are giving away free laptops to everyone, which they aren’t, it should be fine if you line up at around 2pm or 3pm. Not that many people usually line up that far in advance, but since it is the first boston store and the boston globe article, who knows how crowded it will really be.
And it’s the largest store in the world, so there’s bound to be some international visitors… likely coming in on the earliest flights that day. Not enough to pop the line to over 200 by 9 in the morning, but something to think about.
