The interior of the future George Street (Sydney, Australia) retail store is not close to being finished, according to a photo snapped on Monday, indicating that a grand opening is several months away. An interior photo shows metal studs have been installed, and some above-the-ceiling work is being performed. Over the past week the scaffolding has been taken down in front of the two-story glass storefront, leaving only a black structure visible at the front. Pasted onto the structure are city permit documents that give contractors special permission to work extended hours: up to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m to 6 p.m. on Sundays. However, the permit expires on May 20, 2008. It’s routine for Apple to work nights and weekends in the final phases of store construction to insure the store opens on schedule. Based on these latest photos, the store opening could be three months away.
Local coverage of the George Street store construction is on-going at MacTalk Australia.
Workers toil under lights on the interior of the future George Street (Sydney) retail store. It appears that only the overhead, above-the-ceiling work has been performed, and that the walls, ceilings and other furnishings are incomplete.

This permit gives Apple’s construction team special permission to work longer hours.

Ah, how the U. S. businessmen who dealt with Australian labor practices used to complain! I would guess they still do!
Hey Gary,
If you’re going to steal our leg-work, would you at least give us the courtesy of a link back to where you got it from?
Cheers,

[IFO -- Oops! Someone is anonymously sending me photos that appear to be originals from his/her own cell phone camera. I didn't realize that anyone else was also posting them. Visitors...for local coverage of the Sydney store, check MacTalk Australia.]
I believe that the fitout of the store will commence toward the end of the month and that the store will be complete by June-ish. This is what has happened with other stores overseas in terms of speed of fit out, and is probably what will happen in Sydney.
i wish (hope) Apple will announce it with a bit of notice.
us people in Hicksville (Brisbane), who might not get an Apple store for 10years, jsut might want to book cheap flights to sydney for the event.
still, I hear Apple are opening stores in public toilets in the US now. or at least, that’s more likely before we get more in australia.
:-(
Hey, that was me that sent the photos to you through your tip thing, I posted them on MacTalk and sent them here, on MacTalk they were just in a forum post, it didn’t occur to me that the MacTalk guys would pick it up as a news story. Although in hindsight it makes sense they would. Sorry for the confusion caused, I probably should have just picked one place to send them and then link everyone else to the original (although so far I’ve only sent them here and posted them on MacTalk).
