A recent $20 million upgrade to the Del Monte Shopping Center, and the presence of significant military education and tech facilities in Monterey (N. Calif.) has Mac enthusiasts hoping that Apple will move into the space being vacated soon by Limited Express. New housing developments at the former Fort Ord also factor into the decision by several other retailers to reconsider the long-languishing mall in this oceanside town about two hours south of San Francisco. Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma will eventually join Macy’s, Whole Foods and a 14-screen cinema at the mall, which has been renovated into a lifestyle center. The mall’s service area includes the affluent towns of Carmel, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach, along with the DOD’s Defense Language Institute, Naval Postgraduate School and other Navy education facilities.

There already is a pretty good Apple Store in the Monterey area. Monterey Bay ComputerWorks in Seaside near all the car dealers. They do a good job of selling and servicing Apple Computer products.
Nice pitch for Computer Works there Mike. I’m sure you’re not in any way affiliated with them though.
I like the Monterey Bay ComputerWorks store. It has good stock of things not in an Apple Store. Thus it is a good store to go to even if an Apple Store opens up.
However, if an Apple Store opens up, I’ll be there all the time at lunch since it is only a few blocks from work.
The question is whether there is enough traffic in Monterey to support an Apple Store. Perhaps a small one - not a full one. Thus this may not compete with Monterey Bay ComputerWorks since it won’t carry a lot of items - accessories.
Still… I know where I’m going to buy my next iPhone!
Booyah!
Apple WILL be opening a retail store @ Del Monte, there is a job link for it.
