A permit issued by the New York City Department of Buildings shows that Apple is installing a circular glass staircase in the future 14th Street retail store. The permit allowed Shawmut Design and Construction to work up to midnight on November 1st, 2nd and 3rd to complete “installation of large glass circular stair, landing and enclosure.” Usually construction work must end at 6 p.m. But the new permit [photo] allowed construction between 6 p.m. and midnight on last Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Previous weekend work and this permit seem to indicate that Apple intends to open the store by year’s end. The permits indicate Apple has so far spent $1,250,000 on store construction, while the building owner has spent over $10 million on demolition and renovation. Apple’s cost doesn’t include the value of the interior design materials, which could add another $500,000.

I passed by the store on Sunday, November 4th and construction workers were active. I didn’t realize a special permit was necessary for this – I thought it was up to the contractor. I figured that Apple was putting pressure on the contractors to get the store finished in time for the holiday season.
Just walked by the store and boxes labeled “Kikukawa Apple 14th and 9th” were outside. Looks like the metalwork has arrived!
