One or more burglars cut a hole in the ceiling of the University Village (Seattle, Wash.) retail store some time Sunday night and took several laptops and iPods that were being repaired. The burglars were reportedly stymied by security features for new merchandise and left without boxed merchandised, but did take products that were left out on repairs benches, along with refurbished iPhones. They also cut a cable on a technicians laptop and took it. In all, a police report on the burglary stated that as many as 20 laptops may have been taken. Customers report their computers were quickly replaced by Apple, but that no accommodation was provided for downloaded iTunes music, lost photos or data. There also no word on how any sensitive customer information on the laptops might be safeguarded. Update: A newspaper report says an alarm company notified police at 4:44 a.m., and that the alarm was caused by “rear motion or entry.” By various accounts, either the police or an Apple employee arrived, but did not notice the ceiling hole. The burglary wasn’t discovered by employees and reported to police until 8 a.m.

So the thieves got (most likely) broken computers and repair customers got new computers. Win/win!
As for replacing any of the content, loss of content on any repair computer is never the responsibility of Apple. This is gone over via the repair contract before the computer is left for repair. Also, Apple stores offer data backup (for a fee) if the customer does not have his/her data backed up.
I live in the Seattle-area. The local news station mentioned it last night as well. Meanwhile, I remember that I had my MDD fixed in that U. Village Apple Store years ago. Judging from the front-end of the store, I bet the backroom is pretty big.
It’s a good idea to backup everything before handing a ’sad’ Mac to the Mac Genius.
