When Apple opened the Fifth Avenue (NYC) retail store last year, it marked a milestone in retail design, not only for the retail space being underground, or the huge glass Cube up-top. It was also an enormously precise, expensive and complicated design, among the top retail locations in the world. That’s why Apple commissioned WSFilms to document the construction process, which brought together materials and expertise from Italy, England, Japan, Germany and the U.S. The company posted the amazing seven-minute video that revealed the store’s creators and how its components came together–but after two days the video was removed. The film was screened for retail employees as part of the ramp-up to last year’s holiday season. Now you can watch it on Google video.

That’s an interesting film on the design and building of the Cube Apple Store! It really takes a long time to download! The discussion of the Purity of form is reflected in Friday’s NYTimes Arts section on Phillips Johnson’s Glass House in Connecticut.
It makes me want to go out and get my G4 Cube from the garage. The last time I did that I was appalled at it’s lack of performance.

VERY interesting and VERY well produced. There was obviously some money put into the making of that film (trip to manufacturing plants, quarries, and helicopter shots of the store itself). Thanks for the link!
