The population of the Hawaiian island of Oahu just ticked over 900,000, but it’s the seven million annual visitors that Apple apparently wants to welcome by opening a third store on the island at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Honolulu. The mall is undergoing an $84 million expansion that will add space along Kalakaua Avenue, and Apple has filed a building permit for a two-story retail store there, according to the Honoulu Advertiser. The mall is at a key location, adjacent to the upscale Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Waikiki Beach and many other retailers. The expansion will be finished by year’s end, and the Apple store could open in early 2008.

FYI - It’s the Honolulu Advertiser - there is no Post in the name. Frankly I’ll be amazed if local folks will travel in to Waikiki to go visit the new store. Parking is such an expensive hassle down there. [IFO -- Thanks, correction made.]
