Meatpacking Store Construction

May 5, 2007

Thanks to Peter for the photos of the week-end construction at the future store in the Meatpacking District of New York City. The photos show the interior of the building and its underlying structure, long before Apple begins to add its distinctive retail architecture.

Doesn’t look like wood beam construction to me. I think it’s all concrete. You can see one of the vertical columns has been chipped away to reveal a steel girder. It is clearly concrete over steel girders. If it were wood, you would see angle irons holding joists to the beams where they are joined. Instead all the joints are smooth and seamless. This is a steel and concrete building with a brick facade. Not wood beam. [IFO-Story corrected.]

Wow, there was a nice French/Belgium restaurant there that was very detailed with antique fixtures imported to Europe it is somewhat of a shock to see this total gut job. All I can say is that Apple is serious about retail and they must be making a profit from these stores or at the very least this store like the other two Manhattan locations are fantastic advertisement. Most tourists have a list something like this, Empire State building, “Ground Zero”, Statue of Liberty and one or both Apple stores.

I’d have to agree with Nani. It looks like steel and concrete to me also. I don’t do a lot of new commercial construction, but I do a lot of maintainance and troubleshooting on commercial properties as an electrical contractor of many years.

Yes, no question, steel and concrete. How was this thought of as being wood beam?

The restaurant was Markt, and they were basically forced out because they had low (pre-hipness) rent.

They re-opened at 6th & 21st, but I haven’t been there yet.

The Seaworld deli next door will be missed as well. They had some kick-ass fried chicken and mac ‘n cheese for $5.
