Yes my mistake – EAST facing glass box (can you spot a north point on the plan?). Doesn’t make that much difference though, except that there is slightly less heat load in the morning than there would have been in the afternoon. There is plenty of space between their facade and the building diagonally across the intersection for summer heat to be an issue – and one that can only be resolved with air conditioning. It is a pity Apple’s exciting and innovative industrial design doesn’t carry over to the functionality and responsibility of their architecture.

Where did you get your information from? The shopfront faces east towards Pitt Street, on a downhill slope. The only afternoon heat this place will be getting is from the intense foot traffic outside.

It’s actually East facing, as well as being blocked-in by skyscrapers on all sides. So I wouldn’t worry too much: look on the bright side and think of all the natural lighting the store will get!

It has to be said……Apple/Mac products reflect intelligent design – both in the aesthetic and practical – that proves the antidote to the mindless morass of mediocrcacy that pervades so much of our everyday lives.
Not surprisingly that is reflected equally in what Apple seeks for their built environment.
Congratulations to Apple for for their design brief – and in this particular instance their retailing environment – but also to the successfull architectural firms.
We all benefit when quality overides quantity as the dominant paradigm.

Nice design, but a west facing glass box in Sydney? This might be appropriate for North America, but it is just another example of architects and their clients ignoring the global consequences of keeping these glass buildings cool, with power from coal fired, CO2 producing power stations. The fact that they sought and were granted planning approval with this design in an indictment on Apple, their architects and the authorities involved.

Boohoo JamesAU :-) At least you are on that side of the country. $50 cheap flight and you are in Sydney. I think we are more likely to get videos on iTunes in Australia before there is a store in Perth! $300 plus for us to see the new store :-(

How dissapointing. We still need to wait for a store a little further south in Melbourne. Then not only will Apple’s Australian presence be secured, but they will also be located in a far more interesting city. At least it’s a start.

I look forward to news of Apple’s presence at Fed Square.

Wow!

Aussies look like getting an Apple store before France (that will really piss the French off). Nevermind, the French will just have to keep getting the Eurostar to London, heh, heh!

This is a bit surprising since Bruces and Sheilas still can’t even get the iPhoto printing service. (Despite the fact that Kodak’s Ofoto service is available in Australia and Apple use Kodak for printing in the US and Europe.)

That store does look george-ous, sorry I couldn’t help myself. I think it’s wonderful that Sydney get’s their own stores, and why not start off with a bang? Apple keep upping themselves with each new flagship, starting with Soho. Then there was Ginza with 5 amazing stories, then my home store on North Michigan Avenue with a rooftop garden and an apple window cut out of the sandstone exterior. Next was Regent Street in an BEAUTIFUL historical building and what an amazing job they did on restoring that. The latest one to open is 5th Avenue, and that glass cube is really astonishing. Now they’re having all three stories open to the outside with huge windows and PLENTY of visibility thanks to the 10′ glowing logo. Great job apple!
