An Apple spokesman has confirmed that the company has submitted architectural plans to the city of Sydney (Australia) for a retail store. It would be the first store in the country, and the first in the Asian Pacific region outside Japan. Spokesman John Marx would not disclose the location of the store, saying only that Apple is working to have the store’s architectural plans approved. However, tipsters have identified 367 George Street in the central business district as the location of the future store. The 14-story corner building was formerly occupied by a Westpac bank branch on the ground floor and offices above. If approved, Apple would perform an $11 million renovation that will make space for a retail store on the first three levels. The building is about one mile from the famous Sydney Opera House, and has an all-glass façade that is reminescent of Apple’s Fifth Avenue cube, or the future Bolyston Street store in Boston.

It’s true that this building is currently undergoing renovations but there is limited space on the ground floor for a retail space, especially for a flagship store. The building has been ear marked for a conference centre, virtual offices and residential penthouses. There is no doubt that a store in this location would be successful but the limited space suggest that this site is not best indented for Apple. If Apple wanted to make it’s mark on Sydney, they would of secured the old Gowings Store which is a little further down George Street, opposite one of Sydney’s most prestigious shopping strips and buildings, that being The Queen Victoria Building (QVB).
YAY, YAY, YAY.
Please let this go through – Apple store Down Under, how exciting!!
Although don’t know why i’m excited – I live nearly 2,500 KM away from the proposed site LOL.
To be honest – TV Shows & Movies on AU iTunes would be much more helpful.
