You should take a look at GadgetTrak (www.gadgettrak.com).

You install software on the iPods, when someone accesses the USB partition it communicates with a remote server. If the devices are flagged as stolen it sends data back about that device including location info, IP address of the system, internal network address, username and computer name. If even one of these iPods phoned home to the server it would have provided additional clues into where all of the devices might be, or went.

I, too, was an Apple Store employee. San Francisco lost a whole case of original Nanos, WITH an employee posted at the door! We chased them into the Subway, but to no avail.

Management at the downtown store is a joke at best. One of the managers was with a WALGREENS before coming to Apple. Several were from the GAP. (Talk about EXPERIENCE!)

... and SECURITY? Well, let's say that most got off the short bus when they were in 'school.'

Apple's insurance won't pay for it and if it will then find out who insures them and I'm signing up! What kind of an idiot leaves a box of iPods packaged and ready to go? I actually own an Apple Center (APR now) and we've had tons of theft. Apple wanted us to install open book shelf cases, but we glassed them in..they were not pleased. I understand that they want to believe in the goodness of humanity..but humanity are thieves..it's a fact.

I use to work at an Apple Store also. Wow. Those were great days! I use to get finger banged by the Store Manager in the back room during the 6PM sales rush. He sure knew how to give this hot, post-opt tranny and good time. Memories.

Come on. It takes guts to walk out with a whole case. Moreover, it really does not matter, as Apple's insurance will pay for it.

ha!

I worked at an Apple Store when those display cases were first rolled out. Myself, another Specialist, and the manager on duty took one look at them, and how we were "supposed" to set them up, and laughed. We filled them with empty boxes. When Apple sent word down that this practice was unacceptable, we put in live product, glued the boxes shut, and glued the boxes to the tables. When we later had to move or remove a box, it took us 3 people to do it.

Sure, Apple didn't want it that way, but no one stole 42 nanos from us either.
