The former Reitman's is leased to BEBE...not Apple. BEBE logos went up on the hoarding a few weeks ago. The hardwood you saw is actually laminate, existing from the ex-Reitmans. There is no deal with Chinook - its DEAD.

I was at chinook today, the old Reitman's store is covered in the white drywalling, though the Reitman's logo has not been obscured, there is a black tarp to make sure you don't peek through from above into the store. From what I could see in the dim lighting through the crack between the double doors going in there is a hardwood floor in place.
Putting Apple in the location that Reitman's used to be in makes sense, it is right beside Williams Sonoma and across the hall from Aritzia, down the hall from Sephora, and Banana Republic. It is right near the hub of the mall, the food court, so it is a high profile location.
I talked up some customer service reps at the mall, they maintain that they have no idea if an apple store is planned for the mall (seemed as if they've answered this question before...), they also did not know who was going into the empty space.
Lets hope that Apple gets a Calgary store soon, if they don't move into Chinook, lets hope for a flagship (a longshot, I know, but I can dream can't I?)

In case no one has updated the Chinook thing, Reitman's has in fact moved upstairs, the old Caban store is now Sephora (makeup and such) and may the final destination is right near the Sony store next where Reitman's used to be....but someone told me there is an Apple store somewhere else in Calgary, I think they were think of Macdealer or Westworld...who knows!

Reitman's at Chinook is still relocating to a lesser location. But its not APPLE that's replacing it...it looks like Chinook signed a deal with BEBE (trendy women's wear) for the space instead. Will be the only BEBE location in Calgary, and they were probably able to work a better deal.

Poor Michael! Calgary having a better hockey team than Vancouver...hahaha! That's like saying Windows is better than Mac OS X.

Facts:

1) Vancouver/Calgary decisions are independant of each other. Put a store in where it can earn a lot of revenue when you can find the right location.
2) Over double the tourists hit downtown Vancouver than Calgary each year. This is due to both normal tourism and the cruise ships leaving for Alaska. As well, Calgary is more spralling. Vancouver has triple to 10 times the number of people living downtown per square foot with 500k+ people than Calgary's downtown.
3) If you count Banff into Calgary's tourism then lets count Whistler and the Okanagan into Vancouver's. That is why Edmonton's pure city-count tourism is higher than Calgary's (without Banff).
4) It is difficult to find corner-store or prominent retail space available in downtown Vancouver. Factors: 1) Close to Cruise Ship terminal at Canada Place, 2) Close to the retail shopping on Robson, 3) Close to the business sector, 4) Close to residential buildings in both the West End, Yaletown and now the buildings being built towards Gastown - results, Pacific Centre is at the hub.
5) The Flames will go down in a blaze of glory! Go Canucks Go!

Went to an Apple seminar today in Calgary and was told by a retailer attending the seminar that Apple and Chinook have cancelled their deal. This retailer mentioned that Chinook kiboshed the deal. This blows if true.

The Rietmans was still open and had no indication that they were closing as of March 31st. I am not aware of any vacant spots that would interested Apple in Chinook right now. :(

Vancouver is getting a store in a building that has not been built yet - Jameson House on West Hastings. There are already plenty of Apple dealers in the area anyway. Broadway street alone has two.

I believe that Apple chose Calgary over Vancouver because Alberta is the wealthiest province in CANADA. Also, as mentioned by others we have 1 million residents in the city alone plus for 10 days every single summer - the Calgary Stampede gets 1 million visitors. Do the math -
