University Town’s New Store

November 23, 2006

Apple is taking its newest retail store straight to the college crowd by locating in Ann Arbor (Mich.), the home of the University of Michigan. The store will be inside the Briarwood Mall along Interstate 94, about three miles south of downtown and the 40,000-student campus of UM. It will be the third store in the state, and about 23 miles from the existing store in Novi. Ominously, the future store will also be about a mile from the Learning Center Ltd., the city’s full-service Apple authorized reseller.

It’s shame. The Learning Center provides a unique niche. I hope that they both can provide resources. Maybe TLC will still do corporate or business repairs.

This is great news for the university community. Perhaps we’ll get lucky and the Learning Center will fold. They have provided poor-quality overpriced service for years.

I am really, really glad this store is opening. What is the exact date of opening or has this already happened?
As I do need a few things myself for my system. I actually have been thinking on starting to find out how one can Franchise an Apple store in Ann Arbor, myself. As it is really hard to get and find things here for the MAC.

This is wonderful news!!!
But, the Learning Center doesn’t need to go out of business due to this I hope.

1. This store space is pretty narrow and long (25′x180′) so it’ll be interesting to see how much depth will be used for the retail area (perhaps very little, like the Stanford store?)
2. The nearby CompUSA (with dedicated Apple area and 1 Apple sales employee) is closing as part of a massive restructuring underway for that chain. So this store should do quite well from the start.

BTW…the 25′ width for this store is far from certain, this is based on the overall 4,497 sq ft quoted elsewhere on this site and the 7.5-to-1 depth/width ratio depicted in the Briarwood mall directory (which to me appears to be an accurate representation of the site). I visited it today and the unmarked contruction facade is sealed up tight. I noticed the mall directory already has “Apple Store” marked at the #10 location.

FYI…update to my previous post, I paced the construction drywall at the Briarwood location today and it appears to have ~35′ of frontage

I took a peek into the construction area on Apr 16 and found they were still doing demolition (at least in the rear of the space).

Today we noticed that they’ve added Apple branding to the mall-side construction wall.

Just got word from a local Mac mailing list that this store is set to open July 21st. http://www.apple.com/retail/briarwood confirms this. See you all there!
