A map of the ABQ Uptown (Albuquerque, NM) mall shows the exact location of the Apple store–right next to Eddie Bauer in the eastern row of shops. In the Webcam view, the Apple store is in the left-most building, furtherest from the camera. The store’s Geniuses have been perfecting their craft at the Third Street Promenade store in Santa Monica. Read the mall flyer (pdf) for more info and the map, or check these photos by Chris that shows the aluminum support structure now covered with plywood, ready for the stainless steel panels.

Photo not Real?
Unfortunately, the photo of the ALbuquerque Apple Store appears to be fabricated. I drove through the location last night and there is no glass storefront with an Apple on it in that location. There is an empty store front there with scaffolding erected over the front of it. It could be the Apple Store, but it appears they are further away from opening tha the picture would indicate. And if you think about it, an all glass store front doesn’t make much sense in Albuquerque.
This makes me wonder if someone hacked the UpTown Mall site to paste the Apple Store logo in the Mall PDF map, as there is no mention of the store in the lists of stores that are posted on the site.
We all want this to be real and happen fast, but the evidence is less than convincing now.
In response to the above comment: The flyer came from the ABQ Uptown Web site, so it’s unlikely to be a phony. The photo shown on this page is from a cellular phone, and the resolution doesn’t depict the storefront clearly–it’s not glass. Actually, it’s a series of vertical, aluminum support beams that will support the stainless steel panels. So while the store looks pretty unfinished, I can tell you that the latter stages of construction go quickly, and the store could be ready for the mall opening Nov. 1st.
I walked by Monday afternoon and did see that there is a store front being constructed. There is no appearance of an all glass storefront though. There is (so far) only the bare metal framing with some plywood covering it (at my last trek through). It could be the beginnings of a metal/stone facade or they might be keeping with the stone motif of the mall and covering it with an elaborate construction to hide it.
If you’re interested, I can send the series of photos I took walking to work that afternoon…
I went by yesterday after work and they were almost done hanging plywood on the steel studs. The photo makes the steel studs look like glass in the posted picture.
The inside is still pretty bare; concrete floors and studs for walls. It looked like they were hanging drywall.
The good news is that there is a rectangular cutout in the center of the front that is the right aaspect ratio for the the Apple logo. So it all may be real.
I think that this storefront under construction is one space north of the one that is shown in the flyer though. And both of those storefronts are indicated as being still available for lease on the mall web site. The beginning of November will tell. - Duffey
I’ve been excited since Albuquerque blogs broke the story in May.
Check it out!
I’ve been excited since I read the story on Albuquerque Blogs in May!
This will be one happy holiday!
The pictures are obviously not of the location indicated on the ABQ Uptown flyer. Look at the shadows in the first picture. That is a view looking southeast, and for it to be the storefront indicated in the flyer, the view should be looking northwest and it is not. I believe this is a storefront on the opposite side of where the Apple store is indicated that I recall being in an earlier stage of construction than the others. I drove by on the 8th, and saw the Eddie Bauer sign up, but saw nothing like what was in these photos.
Ryan - The store front shown in the photos is on the opposite side of the building from the arrow in the flyer. The flyer shows the backdoor side of the store, and I think it is also displaced by one store. The photos are an accurate representation of what is there, at least as of last Friday when I last drove by. You can drive right past the storefront by entering the mall on Indian school. Just follow the map.
I still find it hard to believe that they will be ready in three weeks for an opening. But I am excited about it. - Duffey
The Apple Store is now listed in the Uptown Mall Directory:
It wasn’t listed the last time I checked. - Duffey
Well it’s the truth ABQuptown posted APPLE as a store on there site. Check it out… abquptown.com
Okay, I just went by and I realized that the flyer map led me to believe the Apple store (along with Eddie Bauer and Coldwater Creek) would be on the east side, but their fronts are indeed on the west side of that row. Loop and Sunglass Hut are in between Eddie Bauer and the Apple store (but don’t go all the way to the back side). There was activity there about 6:30pm and a plywood barrier up in front of the window area to prevent any real view inside.
I’ve heard from a friend (who said: “I just know, don’t ask.”) that they would be opening with the 26 other stores opening November 1.
Take everything with grain of salt, but this is pretty far along for late November opening.
Rather, that they would be opening in the group of 25 other stores. I should learn basic math before I go out typing… :\
APPLE is very secretive because of competition! YES WE ARE GETTING AN APPLE STORE!!!! Nov. 1st
Wouldn’t the store geniuses be training at a more local store? Such as Arizona?
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time! Anyone else planning on waiting in line as early as possible? I want a t-shirt. They still hand those out for the first X people in the door, right?
I dropped by the Uptown Mall yesterday. Some of the stores are open, so you can park inside and walk around. I took a stroll by the Apple Store. There was work on the Apple Store, even on a Sunday afernoon! They were working on the interior and had the door propped open to go in and out One could look inside. The inside is still all sheet rock, but they are building counters around the outside, in typical Apple Store fashion. There appeared to be an Apple sign in a large wooden crate on the ground in front of the store. It was face down, so I couldn’t tell for sure, but it is of the correct aspect ratio to fit the hole in the front. The exterior, including the glass front window is still covered by black sheathing to prevent a peek inside. Maybe they will get done by November 1st.
Went by this evening, and from a small opening in the wall they have put up, I could see this one guy working on the counters or something at about 7:30 pm. It still looks like it won’t make it, but with the work schedule they seem to have, I guess it can happen. The logo area had the backlight, but no logo installed.
I will try to resist buying stuff when it opens because I’m betting they will have their after Thanksgiving sale they usually do.
Darn I am also trying to resist! I just bought a MacBook Pro and I want all the accessories. So they say Nov. 1st huh?
I’ll be able to attend right before I leave back to LA…
Drove by this morning and the Apple logo is up on the outside and the counters and displays are taking shape inside. Not sure if they’ll make 1 Nov
DOes anyone know if they are still opening next week? (nov 1)
