Panel Approves Design

August 9, 2006

Boston’s Back Bay Architectural Commission approved Apple’s revised design Wednesday night for a retail store on Bolyston Street, putting the company one step closer to starting construction on the location. The panel voted 6-3 to approve a plan to demolish the current building occupied by a copy shop, and construct a three-story building that features a glass façade, circular glass staircase leading to a second floor, capped by a skylight and a roof-top garden. During the evening meeting Apple’s architect compared the design to the Fifth Avenue store several times during the presentation, attendees noted. The store design must still be approved by the city’s Redevelopment Agency, which handles demolition and zoning matters.
