Apple is taking the sales opportunity seriously for the upcoming tax-free weekend in Massachusetts. Five of the state’s Apple stores will be open for 48 hours straight the weekend of August 13-14, while the Southshore store will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Massachusetts is among at least 14 other states that offer a sales tax-free weekend, ostensibly to support parents with back-to-school shopping. Listings for Apple stores in other tax-free states don’t include mention of extended hours. In this case, shoppers won’t pay the state’s 5% sales tax on most single products that cost less than $2,500 (no limit on the total purchase). Some other states limit tax-free shopping to clothing and shoewear, but Massachusetts allows computers as part of the tax-free purchases. The tax-free weekend includes Internet shopping, although Apple’s Web-based store doesn’t mention the opportunity [but read this].
