A Boston Globe newspaper story quotes an unnamed city official saying that Apple will indeed open a 4-story flagship store at 815 Boylston Ave., as reported by the LoopRumors Web site earlier this week. The official said Apple is buying the building, will demolish it and then construct a new building “within the next two years.” Apple has undertaken similar demolish-and-build projects in Chicago and San Francisco for flagship stores. Apple must still obtain design approval for the project, including approval by the city’s Back Bay Historic District Commission. Bolyston Street architecture is generally a mix of modern and near-modern, unlike streets just north, which tend towards stone and wood designs. It’s not clear yet if Apple plans to propose its standard stainless steel design, or something that reflects Boston’s traditional architecture.
