Despite the software and procedural glitches experienced with the Symbol portable computers during the holiday iPod Express program, Apple gave them an A+ grade. The devices have remained in use ever since, and now there’s buzz that by this fall, Apple will dump the point-of-sale iMacs entirely and rely only on the portables for ordinary purchases. But it seems impossible to convert all POS functions onto the portables, and connectivity issues remain a major irritation for staffers, if not completely disqualifying .
