A second Apple retail store will open in Houston (Tex.) later this year, on the city’s west side at Memorial City Mall, continuing Apple’s trend to fill out existing store territories rather than expand into new regions. The 1.8 million square-foot mall dates from 1966, but received a $300 million facelift in 2003 that added a skating rink, a food court with a train station motif, an 85-foot domed entrance and a 60-foot tall fireplace in a public hall. The mall is part of a larger office, residential and hospital complex on the city’s west side along Interstate 10. It will be the seventh store for the state, and follows the planned Southlake Town Square and NorthPark Center stores coming to Dallas-Fort Worth this year.
