Call it a miracle on 34th Street: a New York Post article says Apple leased all 30,000 square-feet of the building at 21 W. 34th St., opposite the Empire State Building and just a block from Macy’s department store in New York City. The 5-story building features offices on the upper floor, and most recently a Nine West and Broadway 34 Leather store on the ground floor. The location is literally half-way between the exisitng SoHo and the future GM Plaza stores, and may be a replacement for the now-abandoned Flatiron store site one mile directly south on Fifth Avenue. Will the building become a 5-story flagship in the midst of a busy shopping and tourist district? Most likely, Apple will fit a one or two-level store into the building, which is too close to other stores to become a high-profile site. Another possibility… regional offices or a training center. On the other hand, Glenn feels this location might become the first 24-7 location in the retail chain, reflecting NYC’s creative and technical needs.
