The new left-front window display at Apple stores is titled, "All the books you’ll need," and a suspended display of laptops. The unique display is backed by a two-sided vinyl panel imprinted with a bookshelf photo, and an authentic-looking library-style shelf ladder. The bookshelf is also visible from inside the store, further enhancing the display. Check the ladder–it folds in half for shipment, and its dark-wood finish is really a vinyl covering carefully applied over the original wood.

You’ve been writing, e-mailing, faxing and calling, and now your requests have been heard–expect Apple to clear out a tiny space in their retail stores to sell Apple logo merchandise before the holiday buying season begins. Apple has been offering logo gear for several years at its company store in Cupertino, but has now decided to expand sales to all the stores. Expect to see golf shirts and balls, dress shirts, ties, socks, T-shirts, polos and other merchandise for sale at reasonable prices. [But....later found to be a hoax.]

An article in the July 2005 issue of Architecture magazine examines Eight Inc.’s role in designing Apple’s retail stores, and how the simple design belies the actual complexity that’s required to support technology systems throughout the store. Company partner Tim Kobe said, "The level of craftsmanship that Steve requires is exceptional compared to what most people will accept." He described the precise and exact methods used to design and construct the wooden display tables for the stores, including the single spiral electric cable leading from beneath the tables to the floor outlet.
