While U.S. resellers allege that Apple indulges in unfair business practices, Apple continues to commit resources to develop Apple Centers in smaller markets, including Quito (Ecuador). The MundoMac store opened there last November, near the huge Plaza de las Americas mall, and features the most amazing look-alike interior: white wall with graphics, Fetzer-like wooden furniture, overhead section signs, and imported cement flooring to match the color of the stone used in U.S. retail stores. By any measure, Apple’s design and training investment in Quito doesn’t match the demographics: the country’s annual per capita income is about $1,790. But that figure is distorted by other numbers: a poverty rate of 35%; almost one-half the annual personal income is earned by just 20% of the working population; illiteracy of 23.4%; and about 52% of the population lives on $2 a day. Considering the figures, the impressive MundoMac store optimistically has a client base of just 131,040 people within the metro region, or less than 11% of the total. That’s much lower than most other current and future Apple markets.
