Rants and raves about Apple Computer's retail stores and the world of technology....

A Pong Game?

Microsoft's Milan magic desktop is difficult to decode. First, what on earth is Microsoft doing introducing a piece of furniture topped with a video screen? They're a tech company, not a furniture company. Second, why are they introducing something at $10,000 per unit, and marketed towards hotel lobbies, cellular stores and restaurants? Where are the consumer applications? Third, this is old technology, first introduced by Perceptive Pixel's Jeff Han last year, and demonstrated in this video. And lastly, don't you think there are some existing patents on this technology that Microsoft hasn't licensed? At the least, Apple already claims the two-finger zoom in-out technology, as used in its upcoming iPhone. And way beyond all this, Microsoft says the technology was "years in the making." I'm astounded that the company took years of work to come up with a tabletop video screen, even if you can draw a happy face with your fingers. Is there no one at Microsoft talking to focus groups about what they really want to see in their digital lives? [Read Bill Gates' remarks about the device…which are pretty much unintelligible.]
