Australia: One New Store Confirmed, One Discovered

March 23, 2012

The capitol city of Australia is one of two Apple retail stores that will open later this year, according to newly-posted job listings. The country already has 13 Apple  stores from coast-to-coast, and two additional stores are now under construction in Sydney and Perth. The location of the future store in Canberra isn’t known, but it would be about three hours south of the nearest Apple store in Sydney. There are two potential malls in the region operated by Westfield, one of Apple’s favorite developers—Woden southwest of city center, and Belconnen, northwest. The second job listing likely confirms a two year-old tip about a store at Westfield Carindale, southeast of city-center Brisbane on the east-central coast. Like the Canberra listing, a specific location isn’t mentioned, but in 2010 tipsters said a large tenant was moving out to make space for Apple, and the mall was undergoing a renovation. Construction on both stores could be finished for October 2012 grand openings.

Just one small problem. The construction company that Apple uses has gone into receivership. They’re partially through construction of the Broadway store in Sydney.

Hopefully Apple have lined up a backup construction company!

While Westfield has two stores in Canberra, it is unlikely Apple would choose to locate in either of those places. The most likely place for them is in Canberra City either in the Canberra Centre, a large mall owned by the Queensland Investment Corporation, or in that area on the street.

For Canberra, knowing Apple, it wouldn’t surprise me if they put one in Belconnen Westfield or around Civic. Both areas have many University students and office workers, and are both highly accessible. It would make sense to put it in the centre of Canberra but someone explain Melbourne’s Apple Stores to me.

The Carindale renovations are nearly complete. A large section will be opening 29 March 2012, but seeing as they are only getting around to advertising positions, it will be a little bit longer for the Apple store I guess.

Great news for Canberra, meanwhile we are still waiting for one here in Adelaide. Come on!!!

The rumour right now is that the Apple Store will be taking the place of the Esprit store in Canberra Centre, as well as the stores directly under it, making a split level store.

Adzski March 28, 2012 at 1601

That doesn’t seem very likely, as the Esprit store is currently being refurbished.

Canberra March 29, 2012 at 1514

Renovating a fairly modern store that has been performing below expectations?

Wait for it.

CONFIRMED: Esprit staff have been told there is a new Apple Store being built in their location, and the Esprit store will be relocating ‘next to Strandbags’.

Whatever March 31, 2012 at 0651

Whatever, ‘Canberra’. The fact you write CONFIRMED in capital letters at the start of a post doesn’t give it more credibility. Just stop making stuff up, why don’t you. The Esprit store next to Strandbags is a temporary store while the actual store is renovated.

Canberra April 2, 2012 at 0150

The Esprit staff have been told they’re moving, as an Apple Store is opening in their location.
The store next to Strandbags is in no way temporary, besides, why would Esprit not just open a basic temporary outlet, rather than fitting an entire new store?
I was simply trying to post about rumours, and wrote confirmed when I received solid evidence of the location.
I am entirely sure that the location I specified is that of the new Apple Store.

Adzski April 11, 2012 at 2057

‘Canberra’ could well be right that the store is going where the old Esprit store was in the Canberra Centre. He/She was right about the Esprit store moving permanently, at least.
The signs on the black hoarding out the front of the old Esprit store have changed – they no longer say the old store is being refurbished, and the one next to Strandbags is a temporary store; they now just say that the “exciting new store” is next to Strandbags.

Jordon April 3, 2012 at 2034

Well this might confirm that the apple store might just be on its way.

No Apple shop here. This fit out is for the new ZARA store, a woman’s shopping experience like no other…..look for massive line ups on opening day

SM August 23, 2012 at 2048

Looking at that plan the store will be going where the “38” currernltly is. It will have two corridors down either side and large frontage, the current Boost Jooce is moving from out the front. I wonder if Apple specified that it needed to move. This site is fairly high traffic and has the advantage of a the 3 sides – one which leads directly to a carpark

Westfield malls:
Woden is unlikely as it is older and due for a refurbishment soon. Doesn’t seem classy enough for Apple.
Belconnen is somewhat likely (recently totally refurbished) but not close enough to the rest of the city.
Canberra City… If Jordon is correct then it’s definitely not Esprit’s old location… Esprit is the large white block next to the number 38. Interesting spot, but seems about right. I’d put my money on Canberra Centre… Fingers crossed!

This post oddly doesn’t mention that there is a Brisbane city centre Apple Store opening as well even though previous posts have announced it and job listings confirm it. Just an oversight?

Tom May 14, 2012 at 0057

Internally, these three announcements all came at once. The Brisbane city centre store was announced a very long time ago.

D May 14, 2012 at 0117

Phew…this quote:

“The country already has 13 Apple stores from coast-to-coast, and two additional stores are now under construction in Sydney and Perth. ”

not mentioning the Brisbane store under construction had me worried :)

Bill May 20, 2012 at 0902

Jordon could be right…except that it says “Zara” at the top of the plan, which just happens to be a major clothing retailer.

Dr May 20, 2012 at 1817

Apple carindale has a developers info sign on the back entry to the confirming it’s an Apple store!

Dr May 28, 2012 at 0347

How long does it take to fitout an apple store?
