North Carolina Store Scheduled For Expansion

July 25, 2011

As part of Apple’s on-going project to provide more space for customers, sources say the SouthPark (NC) retail store will undergo construction to expand into the adjacent Sur La Table space. The current store occupies about 3,000 square-feet  in Section C of the mall, with a nearly 40-foot storefront. The expansion would add nearly 50 feet to the width of the store and another 4,000 square-feet to the interior. The store opened in March 2004. There’s no timeline for when construction might begin or be completed.

Sources say the existing SouthPark store (red) will expand into the adjacent Sur la Table space (yellow).

you have it wrong Apple will take over GAP in 2012. The store will move into the gap store location.

Fair enough…moving to larger quarters. Looks like the GAP would be a 40% larger space for Apple. Check this diagram of the space move.

That will be a huge apple store!!!!!!!! When is this move happening? Where will gap gap kids move?

Not sure the exact date. I don’t have many details about where gap will move to but the word is that the store will move some time in 2012. Apple is very secretive of any details. I will post more as I find out. Not to say that the first proposed move may not be true, things could have changed and I am sure that apple would prefer to stay in its current location and expand. The Sur La Table space space would be a big store front much more that 40′. The apple store is a 35′ store front and on the plans shown the stock room is beside the store(long an narrow following the north wall of the retail store. So apple plus Sur La Table space would make for a very long store front as well.

Interesting idea. With a second Apple store opening up in Charlotte’s Northlake Mall in August, that, from what I can tell is going to at least twice the size as SouthPark, it would be cool for them to still expand SouthPark. Having already undergone one remodel, though, I’m not sure Apple is quite ready to expand the SouthPark, yet.

Anymore news on apple expanding? I have always thought that their store is too small for the amount of traffic it gets.
The gap store is gigantic and honestly I don’t know where else they can move in the mall.

The roof collapsed over the current Gap Kids space last month. The Gap/Gap Kids store has moved into the former Brooks Brothers and Coldwater Creek last weekend. The roof is currently being repaired, and if Apple is indeed still moving to that space, then this will be a delay for them. If the roof is quickly repaired, which I am sure it will be because the mall was quickly cleaned up overnight and some stores opened Sunday (the collapse happened on Friday) and only 10 stores are still closed, then I would expect them to open their new store by next summer.

Hanna Andersson and Porsche Design are opening in the Gap Kids space. I assume that Apple is taking over the rest of Gap Kids and the Gap space.
