Construction workers are nearly finished on the temporary store that will host visitors while the existing Ala Moana (Hawaii) location is remodeled over the next several months. According to city-county building permit documents, the project will cost $1.45 million and include work on stockroom spaces located elsewhere in the mall. A photo by Ryan shows the black barricade now in front of space #2231 where the temporary store will open this week. The temporary store will reduce the available space somewhat—from 4,476 square-feet to 3,085 square-feet. The Ala Moana store opened in May 2003, in a mall that has some of the highest traffic and per-purchase totals of any U.S. mall. Download the permit documents for the temporary store and the main store remodel.

The existing L-shaped Ala Moana retail store (right) will move three spaces away to slightly-smaller space #2231 during a remodel. The temporary store will cost $250,000 and the remodel will cost $1.2 million.

Great! Hopefully this lead to more floor space. This location is crowded ALL of the time. If not with shoppers than with looky-loos. Because not only does this store do great business, it is also a hang out for shoppers, shopping center employees and tourists checking their e-mail. Even the store in the Kahala Mall less than five miles away has shoppers. Not just people hanging out.
This store was planned when Apple was not making profits at the retail locations, so with a very high rent, they went with a smaller location. The previous tenant included what is the swimwear shop next door and an upper level. (How many shopping centers do you know that are changing the number of levels?) Now with the increased product, iPhones, iPads, MacBook Airs and increased market share of the Macs, it is hard to move in this store. And make sure that you schedule a One to One before the store’s regular hours. Despite a great staff, How can you learn anything in the noise and the crowds.
Hey, fifteen years ago did you think that Apple’s biggest problem would be too much growth?
With 70 billion dollars on hand, maybe Apple should open more than 40 stores a year.
