Three More Openings This Weekend

As tipped off by a listing on the newest version of the retail store iPhone app, three additional stores will hold their grand openings this weekend. First, the fourth Germany store will open at the Centro development in Oberhausen (follow news at The enormous complex is billed as Europe’s largest shopping and leisure center, and includes an aqua park, cinema and model train layout on the site of a former steel mill. Next, the fifth France store will open at the Velizy 2 shopping mall southwest of Paris, not far from Versailles. And lastly, the 29th store in the UK will open at the MetroCentre mall in Gateshead, in the north of the country. The new store is just three miles from the existing Eldon Square store in Newcastle on Tyne. Three other stores were previously confirmed to open this weekend, in Shanghai and Beijing (China), and Bergamo (Italy). Only once previously have so many stores opened on a single day, on October 16, 2004 when six mini-stores debuted and a full-sized store held its grand opening. These openings will be the last of fiscal 2010, with a total of 42 grand openings. During previous financial conference calls, Apple executives promised that 40 to 50 new stores would open during fiscal 2010. There could be another six grand openings during the last three months of 2010, including the long-awaited Lincoln Park (Chicago) store. Update: It was later learned a seventh store would open on Saturday at River Park Square (Spokane), tying the record for single day openings, and bringing fiscal year total to 43.)
