A huge expanse of red velvet “curtain” has been erected on both sides of the future Covent Garden (London) retail store, the traditional signal that the grand opening is just weeks away. In fact, tipsters say the store will open by month’s end. Like at the Opéra (Paris) and Pudong (Shanghai) stores, the curtain is actually a specially printed plastic film laid over plywood. Eventually a final panel will be applied, of the curtains slightly pulled back, revealing a white Apple logo on black, and usually the words, “Coming soon.”

I noticed this yesterday as I walked past.
It’ll be both nice and dangerous to have an Apple store 2 minutes walk from work.
Looks like it’ll be another great high-profile location for Apple.

I know that in many cases, Apple would prefer to tear down the existing structure but is stopped from doing so by local Boards, preservationists, local codes, etc. But when they use an existing structure, such as this one and the new store in Philadelphia, I’ve got to say they really do an outstanding job of incorporating both the old and new elements. Very classy and just one more way that Apple does a far better job than most other retailers (in spite of the hits that Apple has been taking lately on other issues.)
I won’t claim that Apple’s mall stores are all that spectacular, but most of the stand-alone stores certainly are.
